RB Exclusive Interview: Vassy Has Some “Secrets” To Share With You

An artist who needs no introduction to those familiar with dance music, Vassy‘s voice has taken over the industry as one of the most prominently featured vocalists on the scene. Thus far she has released collaborations with artists like David Guetta, Showtek, KSHMR, and the king of EDM himself, Tiesto.

Vassy, along with her co-collaborators Tiesto and KSHMR, have just hit a huge landmark in each of their respective careers. Their hit collaboration “Secrets” has just won the International Dance Music Award for Best Electro/Progressive House Track, beating out other artists like Hardwell, Galantis, Oliver Heldens, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, and Eric Prydz.

“We did something special with ‘Secrets,'” says Vassy of the successful track, “I think it’s kind of a very intimate world and people kind of are intrigued by that darkness.”

And if the success of this track is any indicator of the powerful combination of masterful lyrics and an impeccably crafted production, we have much more to look forward to from Vassy and Tiesto. Following a live performance at LIV in Miami, Vassy performed “Secrets” and a brand new collaboration between herself and Tiesto live at Ultra Music Festival.

“It’s very different than ‘Secrets’. ‘Secrets’ was very dark, and magical, and kind of sexy; this new record, it’s more about the every day love experience.”

In addition, the burgeoning vocalist has much and more in the works including future collaborations and some work of her own. When asked to divulge some details, Vassy couldn’t share much but she did have this to say, “I can definitely talk about the Tiesto one, because we are debuting that tonight. The other two collaborations I can’t say yet, but they are with big DJs. But then I am also finishing my own album.”

In regards to making her own music vs crafting lyrics for electronic artists, “I think that in EDM/Dance I still write verse/chorus, like our new song relies on that, but it’s very much the hook and the drop [with electronic music]. With my stuff it’s more pop records and lyrics that tell a story, so I follow a more traditional songwriting arrangement.” However, with the experience she has accumulated over the years, her collabs with these DJ’s plays an integral role in her integration to all spectrums of the industry, “I do a lot of the writing and then work with my ideas, and I’ll put it together and I will record it. Then I will send it over, and say something like, I think we should make the song like this, and then you know, they either fall in love with it or not, they generally do because I kind of know now what they are looking for.”

As Vassy continues to grow, hopefully we will see more recognition for her incredible work like with the IDMA win, and hopefully more collaborations with huge electronic producers, and maybe even the integration of her own original music into this world of ours.

For those of you looking to follow in the footsteps of Vassy, she has this advice to give: “I think you just have to believe in yourself for starters, because everyone is going to try and knock you down. You have to really put in the work and the time. Just keep doing your thing, and be humble. Try to be nice with everyone. Be firm on the things that you to to be. And stay authentic. Eventually timing and persistence really starts to pay off.”
