RB Exclusive Interview: Adventure Club Talk Their New Album and Premature Future Bass

Superheroes Unite! Adventure Club is returning to the Valley of the Sun with two shows this July in both Scottsdale and Tucson! The Canadian Premature Future Bass duo (more on this term below) consisting of Leighton James and Christian Srigley last made an appearance in AZ for their midnight slot on New Years Eve at Decadence, trapping out into the New Year with none other than everyone’s favorite Fetty Wap track, “Trap Queen.”

Adventure Club has made some serious waves in the industry with their unique bass sound at some of the largest festivals in the world including having been responsible for the production of the featured track in the EDC Las Vegas trailer in both 2014 and 2015 — “Gold” and “Crash 2.0” respectively. With a bustling tour schedule it has been relatively quiet from Adventure Club on the new music front, but that is all about to change…

After playing both EDC and Electric Forest over the last couple of weeks, featuring a pair of stunning emotion filled sets including originals like “Wonder,” “Limitless,” and “Fade,” as well as top remixes like MSMR’s “Hurricane” and Max Elto’s “Shadow of the Sun.” These two sets are highly reflective of all aspects of this duo’s talent and it is looking to me like we are in for quite the treat come July.

But before that, Leighton and Christian sat down with me to discuss these incredible last two weeks, new music they have coming our way, their experience with Arizona, and the tendencies to break perfectly good phones (Leighton broke one the last time he was in AZ). Check it out!!

So you guys were just in Vegas for EDC and now you’re here at Electric Forest. These are both crazy massive festivals, but they are both in completely different landscapes and possess contrasting atmospheres.

Leighton: They’re two completely different animals.

How do the two of you prepare for EDC as opposed to Electric Forest?

Leighton: EDC we definitely cater our set more toward the strict electronic crowd, we play more like dubstep and more 124 and four to the floor type stuff; whereas, with Electric Forest we can really play more and go more into like the Jam Band kind of songs, a lot of songs that we normally wouldn’t really get to play at EDC. A lot more kind of experimental songs.

Did you guys get the chance to check out any sets today?

Leighton: Unfortunately we got in pretty late. If I were to check out any sets today I would have checked out Gallant, Stephen, and NGHTMRE.

What about you?

Christian: Same *laughs*

How did the involvement with Bassrush come about? If I’m not mistaken that’s not traditionally something you guys have done in the past, right?

Leighton: I think we can kind of sometimes rotate what we play. Sometimes we play the Bassrush sets sometimes we play more of the main stage sets. The last Bassrush we played was in Seattle.

And with that said, you guys have a really unique take on… dubstep, I guess? Its emotional, its got some feeling to it.

Christian: I don’t know if I’d call it dubstep.

Leighton: Maybe like… premature future bass.

Both: *Laughs*

How did you guys discover that premature future bass sound?

Leighton: It was kind of like a take on Flux, wouldn’t you say?

Christian: There was some influences there, but there were also all kinds of influences just from the scene that we were coming from and it was just a time of experimentation too. We were just kind of having fun with it and then when we finally got songs where we were like, ‘hey, we like what we’re doing here,’ it kind of just worked. You know?

Yeah, for sure. So obviously, a festival like this is a good place to showcase new music, are you guys going to be showing off any new music tonight or do you have any new music in the works that you can talk about?

Leighton: We do have new music in the works. The first single is coming out July 15th, album is going to be in September. We’re aiming for 12 completed songs — 12 originals. As far as presenting it tonight, there are still a lot of W.I.P’s. It’s a maybe.

Are you working with any other artists on it? Any collaborations?

Leighton: There’s going to be a lot of collabs on it. Unfortunately we’re not really at liberty to say who.

Here at E. Forest you guys are doing a lot of cool experiential things like your This Song is Sick meet and greet. How important is it to you guys to have that connection with your fans?

Leighton: Without your fans you’re pretty much nothing as an artist.

Christian: It’s number one.

Leighton: After music I think it’s number one.

Christian: It’s number two.

Both: *Laughs*

Leighton: It’s tied for number one.

Last time we had you guys out to Arizona was for Decadence. You led us into the new year with “Trap Queen” by Fetty Wap.

Leighton: “Trap Queen” *laughs*

We’ve got you guys again in Tuscon at the Rialto and in Scottsdale for a pool party. What can we expect from you guys this time around, both in Tucson and at the pool?

Christian: The pool’s going to be a crazy time.

Leighton: You will have new music by that time too, so there’s that to look forward to.

And how do you differentiate what you would play at a pool party as opposed to what you might play in a setting like… Tucson?

Leighton: I think in Tucson we’re at a bit more liberty to kind of showcase what we want to play, the more creative side of us. At the pool party its all about getting a little raging going, get the water splashing, its all about people having fun.

Hopefully no broken phones.

Leighton: I’m notorious for breaking my phone. This is my second new phone since Arizona. (Pulls out his phone with a cracked screen).

*Laughs* What happened with that one?

Leighton: I couldn’t tell ya.

Any final words for the populations of Phoenix and Tucson?

Leighton: We can’t wait to be back and we expect a wild time at the pool party and in Tucson!

Christian: Can’t wait to see you guys!

So it would seem that we have a lot to look forward to with these two amazing shows coming to the valley: raging, creativity, and a lot of new music! Get your tickets to Adventure Club at both Talking Stick Resort and The Rialto through the links below:
