Relentless Beats

Bear Grillz Claims Phoenix as Premium Bass Location

Apparently, the electronic music scene has been shifting to be more bass oriented. When electronic music first became prominent, tracks consisted of standard 4 beat per measure structure and it was solely called techno music. Today, genres have been divided up into multiple categories, and more sub-genres keep popping up all over the place.

Typically, specific music genres come out of certain cities. For example, house music really hit the fan when parties and raves were frequent in the early 90’s in Chicago. The term ‘house music’ was coined because most of these underground parties were thrown in warehouses. Cities all over the world consist of all genres of music, but some are more recognized for specific ones than others.

Phoenix was never really considered to be home to any specific genre. It wasn’t until this past month, Bear Grillz came to town with Midnight Tyrannosaurus and was wowed at the energy attendees brought to the Monarch Theatre. Both rails that divide the venue into two were packed with headbangers using it for balance. The entire venue was up on their feet. Bear Grillz posted a recap video from the event with the caption, “recap from Phoenix at the Monarch / you guys were crazy.”

Before the recap video came out, Bear Grillz tweeted about how a discussion needs to be initiated about Phoenix being a basshead city. Plenty of people responded to this, and it is now being recognized that Phoenix does consist of a lot of bass. Luckily, events from all sorts of genres come to Phoenix, but the bass events have been having the largest turnouts.

In fact, our BOO! lineup was the heaviest on the tour. Excision, Snails, Nghtmre, Ghastly, G Jones.. Every artist that performed is bass influenced. San Francisco and Dallas lineups were a little more diverse, so it is starting to show that the valley is home to a load of bass lovers. Phoenix is developing at an extremely fast rate, and it’s exciting what the music scene will develop along its journey in the desert.
