Relentless Beats

Avicii’s ‘SOS’ is a Beautiful, Poignant Ballad

earlier this month Avicii‘s first posthumous single, “SOS,” was released to the public. The song features vocals from Aloe Blacc, the singer who collaborated with Avicii on his hit song, “Wake Me Up” and completed by producers Albin Nedler and Kristoffer Fogelmark. Already the track has over 40 million listens on Spotify. Avicii, born Tim Bergling, tragically died by suicide in March of last year and his song’s poignant lyrics show insight into the late producer’s life.

The song features everything we loved about Avicii: warm synths, bright melodies, and a dance-floor drop that only Avicii could master. The song is only two and a half minutes, but each and every note is deeply touching and sentimental. In a video detailing the production of “SOS,” Nedler explains that they had preserved the original MIDI recording of the track, meaning that the melodies we are hearing were all played on the keyboard by Avicii, “He had a completely different way of playing piano and keyboard. As a result, his fingers would sometimes strike an unusual key, which added to his unique sound. Tim’s fingerprints are literally across the entirety of ‘SOS'”.

Several weeks ago it was announced that Avicii was over 90% with a new album before his death. The album, titled Tim, will be released in June and proceeds will be donated to the Tim Bergling Foundation to support mental health awareness and suicide prevention.

“SOS” is a fantastic song alone, but holds deep meaning for his close friends, family, and fans. Listening to the lyrics brings light to Avicii’s personal struggles. The music video features quotes from fans across the world explaining their love for the deeply missed artist. Avicii revolutionized electronic dance music in the late 2000s with “Levels” and his contribution to music is not going unnoticed. From a documentary about Tim Bergling’s early life and rise to fame to an honorary Grammy, Avicii is being remembered as the brilliant musician he was and always will be.
