YetepFor this week’s Relentless Beat of the Week let’s throw it back real quick. This track takes me back to my freshman days in the dorms at Arizona State University. This was back before I had fully invested myself into learning about electronic music and everyone one was listening to Skrillex‘s remix of Benny Benassi‘s “Cinema”. I literally could not go anywhere on campus without hearing it somewhere. I would here it in the halls of the dorms, playing on the speakers of some bros hanging out under the shade of a tree, softly through the headphones of a studying scholar, literally everywhere. But I think that that is just a testament to the quality and sheer popularity of the song. I remember I had tickets to the Skrillex show at the Marquee that year, but like the silly little freshman I was I though “he’ll probably just play Cinema over and over again, why should I go?”, so decided I had better things to do. I didn’t. Idiot.
BENNY BENASSI ‘CINEMA’ (SKRILLEX REMIX)
Anyway, with Benny Benassi coming to Release Pool Party next weekend, what better time to revisit this instant classic and track that reminds a good chunk of us of our early college years. The original track and the remix features mesmerizing vocals from Gary Go, but its Skrillex that takes it to a whole other level. This remix was created back in early 2011, and was used as the WWE launch promo. The track was extremely successful, as mentioned above it was popular throughout youth culture, but in addition to that, the track was nominated for a Grammy. Well, it was nominated and WON for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical at the 54th annual Grammy Awards. But an even higher honor… the almighty Kanye West referred to the song as “one of the greatest works of art ever made.”
With over 100 million views on YouTube, this track does not need any more evidence to prove that it has been successful and has remained relevant over the four years since its release. Even more impressive is that the season veteran, Benny Benassi, is just as relevant now than as ever. Collaborating with some of the most popular names around today, Benassi has managed to keep himself in the game and I couldn’t be happier. Next week, this electronic music extraordinaire comes to Phoenix alongside the legend himself, Paul Oakenfold, the day before. We get to see two DJs who represent the roots of our genre and they will be showcasing what made them as talented as they are and always have been. Don’t miss Paul Oakenfold at Monarch on July 11 and Benny Benassi at Talking Stick Resort the morning after! History will be playing itself out and you’re going to want to be there to witness it.
