RB Exclusive Interview: German House Trio DBN Discusses Their Latest Single “Asteroid7” ft. Madita

DBN may not necessarily be a household name, but the German trio has been contributing to the dance scene for many years. Having kicked off their career in 2005, for the last ten years these guys have been pumping out releases left and right, receiving support from the likes of Avicii, EDX, Dirty South, Laidback Luke, Cosmic Gate, and many more. As you can see, their music satisfies the taste buds of many different types of fan with support from artists of various genres.

Most recently, DBN released their latest single on John Dahlback‘s Mutant Records. This new track, “Asteroid 7”, treats listeners to the current groovy trend that has taken over the dancefloors; however, the trio adds an element to the track that is not often heard. Take a look at the conversation I had with Djani, Patrick, and Tobias, below!

You guys just finished up at ADE this last weekend, how was the event? Do you have any great stories from this weekend?

Yeah, ADE is always great! It was really amazing to meet our old friends and collaborators and of course it was great meeting new ones too! So it was a cool but also really stressful trip! So, when we finally arrived at home, one of us was completely “destroyed” and had to stay in bed for a few days due to lack of sleep!

At the moment we´re also doing a TV documentary for German television so a camera team was with us the whole time in Amsterdam. It felt a bit unusual to us that we always had to look out for what we were doing and saying because as you know the camera never sleeps…

I’m sure with it being your latest single, you had to have played “Asteroid7” this weekend. How was it received by the crowds?

For sure, we played “Asteroid7” in every set and the reaction was always good! For us this track is a perfect ‘transition’ between deeper stuff at the beginning of our set to some more house and electro tunes later on. People especially like “Asteroid7,” maybe due to the vocal line! You know: If people are dancing then we have done our job!

Working with vocalists adds a whole other layer to the track and the production process, what went into working with Madita and how was she as a collaborator?

Madita is brilliant. We really love her voice and the way she writes with such professionalism and passion! We’ve known Madita for a few years now, so the production process was really quite easy! We first finished the instrumental track at our studio in Hamburg a few months ago. Afterwards we sent Madita the instrumental and she wrote the topline in Vienna where she also recorded the vocals! It was love at first sight and we were super happy with the result, not a single feedback loop was needed. Everything fitted together perfectly!

You hear that groovy house bassline in so many tracks nowadays, but with the soft and euphoric female vocal to compliment it, you guys put your own spin on the trend. Creatively, what inspired this track?

Yeah, we thought the same thing about the track, you hear so many groovy house tracks these days but a lot of them aren’t that distinct. So we wanted to try out something different: a housey track with an “x factor“, in this particular case it was Madita’s stunning voice! We love to play vocal tracks in our sets so it was about time we produced one. That´s not to say that we have never produced vocal tracks before, but within the last 2 years we have been focusing a bit more on purely instrumental club tracks, so the time has come!

I have heard that you guys are quite the comedians, has there ever been a time where your comedic antics have aided you in your career or gotten you into trouble?

Hahaha we’ve never had a question like this before!

So, comedian is maybe not the right word, it´s more the fact that we love to laugh, especially about ourselves. We don´t take ourselves too seriously! We´re just friends doing what we love and it happens to be our job at the same time, so we are looking to enjoy ourselves as much as possible! I think it’s also necessary to be laid back in such a hectic profession; otherwise it can be very stressful! But no, it hasn’t really got us into trouble yet except that we often stay too long in clubs after our sets and then we have to give the floor a sweep at the end after closing time.

Can you give us any final words for aspiring producers out there who are trying to do what you do?

It´s a combination of different things: believing in what you are doing, having endurance and always staying true to yourself! It probably sounds a bit general but at the same time those guidelines have been and still are very helpful for us to follow!
