RB Exclusive Interview: EPHWURD Says Snapchat That Fat A$$ Don’t Snapchat No Duckface

As what seems to be a common trend in the dance music industry, the dubstep artists DATSIK & BAIS HAUS have teamed up to create something brand new. In order to avoid the stigmatized reputation of an artist whose been in the industry for a while, where your fans sort of start expecting you to create a certain sound, and since they already had created tracks working together since they spend so much time together anyways; they “just decided to put a ring on it,” and thus the future house duo EPHWURD was born. Originally they started out the project in secrecy, not revealing their identities until their debut at Insomniac’s Halloween music festival ESCAPE where they rocked the mainstage, but now Ephwurd is taking over.

We had the chance to discuss their inception, their music, and what is coming up for this powerful duo:

Ephwurd: Escape MainStage Debut (Halloween 2015)

Nicole Petriw: So tell me about how you two first met (DATSIK & BAIS HAUS)?

EPHWURD: “We met when we were both touring with Steve Aoki back in 2009 on the Identity Festival.”

Nicole: How did forming this duo as EPHWURD come to be?

EPHWURD: “We were already making tracks together and eventually we just decided to put a ring on it lol. The predecessor to EPHWURD was our track “Closer To The Sun” which was in DATSIK’s “Let It Burn” LP.”

Nicole: You guys started the project out as a secret; what made you guys reveal your identities behind EPHWURD?

EPHWURD: “We just wanted to make music and not have any connections to the Dubstep scene cause we figured kids might not be down. After a while on tinkering around people were into it so we decided that it was time to reveal what we were doing.”

Nicole: Is it difficult balancing 2 DJ personas vs. just being DATSIK or BAIS HAUS?

EPHWURD: “Aside from a non stop touring schedule no. We are always together so everything plays into one another. We never sleep though. I think we’ve had like 5 days at home over the past 3 months lol.”

Nicole: When you guys made “Rock the Party” with JAUZ, did you expect it to be the festival anthem it turned out to be?

EPHWURD: “Not at all!! We actually were so sick of that tune when it was released cause we worked on it for so long. Usually we like to make songs over a weekend but this project dragged on for a few weeks. We had no idea it was gonna blow up so hard! Guess the extra time we spent on it was well worth it!”

Nicole: Where do you see the future of dance music heading?

EPHWURD: “Better mixes, tighter sound design, better overall production quality. We are constantly raising the bar for ourselves since this scene moves so fast. What was hot 2 weeks ago now seems ancient so we have to keep pushing ourselves to come up with new sounds to keep kids hyped.”

Ephwurd – Duckface feat. DKAY

Nicole: Your original track “Duckface” I absolutely love, and feel it doesn’t get enough credit for the track. Where’d the inspiration come from for “Duckface”?

EPHWURD: “We were on the DATSIK Ninja Nation Tour and late one night Troy got a vocal from one of his Canadian friends. That was one lyric in the file he sent us and we absolutely loved it. So we cut it up, pitched it and thus Duckface was born!”

Nicole: What can we expect to see in the rest of 2016 from EPHWURD?

EPHWURD: “We are touring a ton this summer!! Also we are producing with a lot of different people right now so expect to see some cool collabs in the coming months!”
