For this weeks version of EDMovie Madness we will be taking a look at two music video’s from Bassnectar with lots of visual appeal and The Magician with some unintended relation to the recent Orlando shooting, as well as some behind the scenes footage of Eric Prydz‘ ‘EPIC’ tour.
Bassnectar – Reaching Out
The latest video from DJ and producer Bassnectar is one of the most visually arresting works I have seen since researching new music videos in edm. The short film for the song “Reaching Out,” directed by David Dutton, explores human connection featuring dancer Barbara Woortman as she emerges from a cocoon and floats through the air, defying gravity in an abandoned cathedral. On youtube Nectar left us with a lengthy description stating: “This song is about human connection, but also about our personal journeys and how they intersect in cathartic and beautiful ways in a kind of metamorphosis.” The video opens with a person who is locked inside a cocoon (at times she is just existing, but other times she is struggling to break free). The cocoon might be a natural state of her existing just as a butterfly exists within a cocoon before it bursts free; or it might be more confining, like the walls of a prison in her mind. When we see into her mind, through her eyes, she exists almost underwater. She is swimming inside a magical cathedral with vaulted ceilings…always moving toward the light, yet the experience is disorienting and hypnotic like a dream.”
The Magician – SHY
The Magician recentley released a music video for his track “Shy” that starts off as a love struck story line with an unexpected twist at the end. It appears to be a playful double date when in harmony with the ending chorus saying “Call me crazy, but I’m not shy around you, around you, I’m not shy around you” it turns to boy on boy and girl on girl. The idea of the video is to portray that when you are surrounded by friends and love your shyness can disappear. The video was shot before the Orlando shooting, but has so much more relevance being released shortly after.
