Gorillaz Get Political on Their First Song in Six Years

The Gorillaz, a project created by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, have had a wavering but impactful presence over the years. They sing about a variety of things from genres across the board making sure to never fit into just one box. It’s been six years since Gorillaz 2011 album, The Fall, but now after a lengthy break, the Gorillaz are back with a new track, “Hallelujah Money”. They collaborated with UK singer and songwriter Benjamin Clementine who provides the soulful vocals for the song.

The track was released on the eve of Donald Trump‘s inauguration with this message: “When the morning comes, we are still human. How will we know? How will we dream? How will we love?”

The video features Clementine singing in front of Trump Tower and flashes imagery of native dancers, cartoons, killer clowns, men with white hoods and of course the gorillaz. Beside Clementine’s deep, soulful voice the inspired lyrcis read like a poem.

In a press release accompanying the track, Murdoc, the animated bass player of the band, said “In these dark times, we all need someone to look up to. Me. That’s why I’m giving you this new Gorillaz song, a lightning bolt of truth in a black night. You’re welcome. Now piss on! The new album’s not gonna write itself.” This is our first look at a long overdue new album which is expected to drop sometime this year!
