YetepOne of the most interesting Phoenix Lights announcements thus far has got to be 21 Savage. He will be performing on Sunday night at the Universatile music stage along with Tokimonsta, Cashmere Cat, fellow hip-hop artist Vince Staples, Griz and many more. Although Vince and 21 have contrasting personal sounds, they both fall into a genre of music not commonly heard at Relentless Beats festivals. Expect this stage to bring a fresh twist to the common EDM festival.
Hip-hop and EDM have very different origins and backgrounds but have been merged together in recent years to create an influx of new ideas for both hip-hop and EDM artists. For example, hip-hop beats are now very common in multiple EDM sub-genres while synthesizers and wobble basses can be found in a large group of modern hip-hop.
21 Savage belongs to a hip-hop sub-genre that has made waves over the entire music industry and changed the way music listeners view lyricism. This sub-genre is known as “mumble rap”. Mumble rappers are known to focus on the dictation of their lyrics rather than the meaning behind them. In this way, mumble rappers such as 21 Savage come up with some very sonically catchy songs that are in some cases hard to comprehend. All songs of this nature are accompanied by top notch beats that, as mentioned earlier, embody aspects of electronic music while keeping the classic rhythms and melodic progressions of hip-hop music.
21 Savage’s songs are not only fun to listen to but tell a story of the hardships he has overcome by pursuing music. If you want to hear what he has to say on April 9th, you can find him tearing it up at the Universatile music stage. Also, make sure to check out the rest of the amazing Phoenix Lights lineup and grab you tickets here!
