CID Remixes ’99 Red Balloons’

“99 Red Balloons” is the gift in song form that just keeps giving. No matter how it’s redone, it’s modernized form is always so nice on the ear. What started out as an anti-war song from German band Nena has been given the electronic dance music treatment in 2018 with a remix done by DJ/Producer CID. “99 Red Balloons” was an 80’s pop hit after Nena rerecorded it with English lyrics (it was called “99 Luftballoons” originally). Then in the early 2000s, the track was remade into a pop-punk song done by the band Goldfinger and featured heavily on the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series. Seriously, grinding rails was made so much cooler when “99 Red Balloons” came on. Early this year Swedish DJs Oliver Nelson and Tobtok (along with singer River) created a vivid and modern future house version that kept the cheery intensity of the original version.

Now Oliver Nelson and Tobtok have released a remixed version of the classic they remade. The remix, done up properly by house producer CID, is sure to keep the shufflers shuffling on dance floors. The chorus vocals are repurposed as a melody with a deeper more bassy version of the same vocals laid on top. I just love it when the vocals are opened fully back up and River sings, “when 99 red balloons go by.” The remix is as infectious as the original and as adrenaline-inducing as the Goldfinger version. Check it out.
