Throughout his discography, Preston Charles—better known as SubDocta—has always had an affinity for variety. From his earliest recordings to his latest, Charles has been a consistent champion of ever-evolving change. In other words, while he has always maintained his distinctive style, SubDocta has never pigeonholed himself or his sound. In fact, his latest single, “Iced Up,” is a perfect example of this. From the first verse to the final drop, this one has something for everyone.
Within the first minute of “Iced Up,” it quickly becomes clear that nothing is off-limits. After a classic church bell welcomes the listener into the tune, an immersive atmosphere swells in the background. As the track progresses, one is presented with a fantastic fusion of hip-hop, dubstep, and countless other influences.
For the hip-hop heads, Preston provides a lovely spread of crispy drums, 808 bumps, and a catchy hook on top. Then, for the bassheads, the doctor delivers a massive drop with head-bobbing bass, scintillating synths, and so much more. As if that wasn’t enough, the second drop features an entirely separate selection of sounds!
Suffice it to say, “Iced Up” is a perfect example of what Preston Charles brings to the table. Not only can he produce an extensive range of styles and sounds, but he also does it all at an exceptional level. In other words, whatever SubDocta prescribes his listeners, it will always be an impeccable product.
