When it comes to emotionally-charged artists, few can match the impact of Illenium and Slander. Both have etched their presence in the industry with powerful drops and poignant lyrics, evoking a rollercoaster of emotions that make hearts soar and eyes well up. While both create beautiful music, Slander leans more towards the future trap side, while Illenium gravitates towards future bass. Though it’s impossible to determine who tugs at your heartstrings more, I aim to spotlight three songs from each that will undoubtedly bring tears to your eyes, allowing you to decide for yourself!
“Take You Down” by Illenium
Kicking off this list is one of the most heart-wrenching songs I know. The track delves into personal pain, narrating a journey of self-hurt and the feeling of helplessly descending. It expresses the struggle of navigating through darkness and the reluctance to bring others down along the way. The heartbreaker lies in the lyrics urging you to “let it go now,” while the drop perfectly complements the melancholic tones with a stunning, chill yet piercing future bass sequence.
“Hurts Sometimes” by Slander
Slander masterfully captures the essence of this song, delivering a powerful message from the perspective of someone outwardly strong but internally hurting and breaking down. The song advocates for standing tall and holding your head high, even as you grapple with inner turmoil, making peace with the pain. The melodic bass drop intensifies the emotion carried within.
“Brave Soul” by Illenium, Emma Grace
The next entry by Illenium is a profound exploration of sadness. The lyrics take you on a journey that shifts meaning halfway through, focusing on overcoming loss. The initial half strives to push the lost one out of your thoughts, letting go, while the latter half portrays a new perspective, acknowledging the constant presence of the lost one but finding peace with it. The incredible drop perfectly encapsulates the raw emotion of the song.
“Love is Gone” by Slander, Dylan Matthew
Slander’s most iconic song, the next on the list, has garnered millions of views whenever they share videos of their performances. Inherently sad, the track mourns the absence of someone you love. The spectacular drop, featuring a monumental buildup that builds momentum and emotion, unleashes beautiful future trap sounds, sending your heart soaring with tears streaming down your face.
“Blame Myself” by Illenium, Tori Kelly
Illenium’s following song is iconic, especially with vocals from Tori Kelly. It delves into the aftermath of a breakup, expressing a craving for closure, even if it may be a lie. The song captures the confusion of the aftermath, coupled with a wonderful drop that promises to stir your heart.
“Walk on Water” by Slander, Rory, Dylan Matthew
Closing the list is arguably Slander’s saddest song, serving as a spiritual successor to “Love is Gone.” It expresses the hope for another chance, even though it’s an impossible feat. The song tears at your heart, conveying the willingness to do anything, even the impossible like “walking on water,” to reclaim what was lost. With an absolutely beautiful future bass drop and an unexpected second verse and drop, this song guarantees to evoke tears.
You can catch Illenium this weekend at Wet ‘n’ Wild in Kapolei, Hawaii. While Friday and Saturday shows are sold out, you can still experience the magic on Thursday. Grab your tickets here!
