Five Random SoundCloud Treasures to Add to Your Playlists

Looking for new SoundCloud music? Read below for five top-tier SoundCloud discoveries that I made this week.

“My Pokemon Died” – LYNY

This song has been at the top of my repeat list since I first uncovered it. The song’s main hook “I am buff, I am mad, I am independent” is a sample of “Selecta” by UK artist Cleo. This sample is perfectly meshed with effects that sound like they were ripped straight out of a Pokemon game, which is fitting considering the track’s title. In fact, the introduction is very reminiscent of the score from Lavender Town, a haunting place inhabited by the souls of deceased Pokemon. The Lavender Town inspired intro gives way to a bassy beat, complete with claps and LYNY’s wavy, wubby production style. “My Pokemon Died” seamlessly mixes all of these “random” sources of inspiration into a tight, cohesive track that is hard (if not impossible) to stop listening to.

“drop” – Sterfry

WOW! This is a really REALLY good song. Sterfry bobs and weaves through this track like a spaceship traveling to distant galaxies. A brief melodic intro leads us straight into WUB territory, as biting bass and percussion dance in unity among a starlit background. “Drop” lumbers around at a mid-tempo speed, which is just the way I like it. Thick lines of bass and lighter, airy waves create a perfect balance between the two seemingly contradictory elements of sound. A soothing bridge leads to even slower and HEAVIER bass, before the song speeds up yet again. What a tempo change! Around the 1:45 mark, the song turns into a nearly insurmountable wall of sound that even overwhelms a regular EDM listener like myself. If someone were to ask me what style of EDM I enjoy the most, I would simply point them in the direction of this song

“Trouble” – sumthin sumthin

In case the album cover was not enough evidence already, this is a SPOOKY track with extremely dark and malevolent production. “Trouble” starts out with the haunting whispers of seeming lost souls, as a chilling wind can be heard blowing in the background. These whispers and wind are later accompanied by claps and a sound akin to a section glacier breaking off into the arctic. A drum fill brings us into the main hook of the song, a bouncy, wubby hip-hop inspired beat where a chorus of children can be heard chanting “YAY!” Those of you who are frequent YouTube viewers will recognize this effect almost immediately from creator editing techniques. This song contains a lot of unique production choices that I have not really heard in an EDM song before. Definitely give this one a listen.

“Incoherent” – leet & Snuffy

This one is going to be difficult to describe in the best way possible. Truly the definition of experimental bass music. Needless to say, a clucking rooster, ice cream truck, bike bell, and aquatic bubbles all make an appearance here. A sort of experimental EDM bingo game if you will. The spaces between these elements are glitchy as can be, with the track’s percussion and drums holding things together as these DJs swim back and forth, like the hammerhead shark depicted on the cover. If you are looking for something that is interesting, experimental, and most importantly FUN look no further than here.

“WSN Gemini (CALIBR Flip)” – KLOVA

This song quite literally took my breath away. The vocals and production are on-point and extremely well done! I also never know where this song is going next, even after repeated listens. It is always a fresh, new experience as a notice something new with nearly ever listen. This ethereal song is the brightest on the list production-wise and changes vibe and tempo numerous times. Angelic vocals and steady hooks add to the effectiveness of this flip. Hefty bass and melodic tones effortless blend together to make this quite a treat for the ears. This remix is the sonic equivalent of cruising through Miami in a convertible with the top down on a warm, summer night. Super chill vibes all the way around.
