Beyond the First Drop: 5 EDM Tracks That Surprise and Inspire

If you know me, you know I love the creativity in electronic music. I’m especially drawn to tracks where artists craft songs that feel like stories, with unique vocal progressions and inventive drops. A standout second (or third) drop can truly elevate a track and showcase the artistry of its creator. I’ve put together a list of five of my favorite tracks with unique second (or third) drops. These songs bring me so much joy, and I hope they do the same for you!

“Open Your Mind” by GRiZ, Big Gigantic

This song is the perfect way to start this playlist. GRiZ and Big Gigantic are a match made in heaven, and together they demonstrate how to execute bass tracks with a funky twist. The first two drops are funky dubstep masterpieces, filled with accents that create moments of brilliance throughout. The second drop transitions into a soul-crushing, elongated space bass/dubstep drop that’s nothing short of devastating in the best way. As a cherry on top, the hook for the third drop sends chills down any bass lover’s spine.

“Gravity” by Subtronics, SLANDER, JT Roach

Subtronics and SLANDER are incredible producers, and when they join forces, magic happens. The first two drops are devastating dubstep hits, with the second introducing a high-pitched counter-melody that flutters beautifully over the beat. The third drop, however, takes a completely different approach. It starts with a hook that opens into a massive chord progression, leading to a future melodic bass drop that feels like it’s expanding the heavens with raw power and emotion. This track truly has it all!

“Reasons For Fighting” by Seven Lions, Blastoyz, ERV ELLO

Seven Lions and Blastoyz seamlessly blend their unique styles in this collaboration, creating a perfect crossover track. The first drop is a fast-paced psytrance burst of energy, setting a powerful tone. Following a long and emotional buildup, the second drop transforms into a stunning melodic bass masterpiece, with enormous chords progressing at just the right pace to let you savor every note. The emotion in this track is unmatched—it’s simply perfect.

“Magnetic” by Similar Outskirts

This is one of my all-time favorite songs (easily in my top five), and I firmly believe Similar Outskirts is destined for greatness. The first drop is a videogame-esque dubstep experience, evolving midway to add heavier bass notes that pack a punch. But the second drop is pure magic. Opening with an emotional hook, it transitions into a hybrid future trap/dubstep drop with pitch blending that creates a unique texture bursting with creativity. It’s a masterpiece that screams artistry.

“To the Grave” by Snails, HYTYD, MAX

Last but not least is my favorite Snails track, featuring truly soul-touching vocals from MAX. The first drop is a relatively simple dubstep hit but remains immensely powerful. The second drop, however, showcases Snails’ signature vomit step, with gnarly space bass sounds serving as the melody in a dubstep drop. This drop is a brain-bending experience, making it the perfect choice for any bass lover.

Music has an incredible way of surprising us, especially when artists push boundaries with unique second or third drops. These tracks are a testament to the creativity and talent that keeps electronic music so exciting. I hope this playlist brings you as much joy and inspiration as it does for me. Turn it up, and let the magic take over!
