Riddim Rats: VKTM Takes On Darkstar

With American, Italian and Danish roots, 24-year-old John Alto grew up in both Copenhagen and London, where his musical journey began in his teenage years as he experimented with various sounds and styles. John made his debut on Martin Garrix’s label, STMPD RCRDS where he collaborated with the German duo TwoWoldsApart. Today, his music fuses dark and eerie atmospheric elements with heavy bassline house and emotional pop, featuring experimental nuances that truly set him apart from the rest.
Recently, the emerging sensation relocated to LA to fully dedicate himself to his craft – his commitment was evident throughout 2024 as he joined Alesso’s tour in Salt Lake City, performing at The Midway in San Francisco and opening for him at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in NYC. Kicking off 2025 with his latest release, “Do You Like Bass,” Alto showcases the technical prowess that attracted Alesso to sign him as BodyHi’s first artist. A monumental achievement attributed to John Alto’s strong work ethic. This year is poised to be John Alto’s biggest year yet, with a debut EP on the way as well as an array of thrilling collaborations in the pipeline as he continues to catapult upward within the space.
Purposefully crafted for live play, “Do You Like Bass” features hypnotic, raw energy that demands interaction from the crowd. Designed for the dance floor, the high octane track has already seen support from some of the scene’s heaviest hitters including John Summit and Alesso, who played the song at Coachella in 2024. Whether it’s at a packed club or a massive festival stage, “Do You Like Bass” doesn’t just speak to the crowd – it commands it.
“Do You Like Bass?” features impeccable sampling techniques and top-tier production. John Alto starts our journey with popping bass, salt-shaker effects, and a rising haze of synth. The included sample hypes up a question that the narrator has for the listener. Reassuring them that they have “not two… just one!” With their “main concern” being:
“Do you like Bass? *boom boom* (x4)“
The track then breaks into a swanky house beat with bouncing bass lines, rolling hi-hats, and thumping kicks. Creating an immediate head bob. Warping spirals whiz by and bridge into subtle (and effective) cymbal taps. These taps bounce off thick tech-house basslines that ebb and flow freely. The sample returns, further declaring their love for “bass in their face.” Rapid drums and an intergalactic sweep lead us into the next drop.
This drop is preceded by my favorite sample segment. A “1..2..3” countdown leads into a rhythmic tongue roll and a commandment for us to “do it again.” One of the most unique production choices that I have heard in a while.
Blaring air raid sirens ring out and roll themselves into the infectious groove. Well-timed keyboard hits to add a melodic chop to the mix. The beat continues to roll, welcoming the sample back with open arms. The sample commands us to reply “Hell motherfucking yeah” when we are inquired about our love of bass. Creative decisions like these add swagger and attitude to a track that already demands your attention. This is followed by crispy, thumping bass coated in a trippy starscape.
The drums build again, dropping us into a battle between bass, kicks, and hi hats:
“If you like boom boom bass let me hear you now!”
The groove sets in one last time, closing the track with the sample we have come to love.
“Do You Like Bass” was my first experience with John Alto’s music and made me an instant fan. The track is confident, funky, and fresh. A precisely layered bop with a sample that adds a fun, interactive twist to the listening experience. This twist creates a connection between producer, writer, and reader that truly celebrates this incredible release.
“I was experimenting with some new sounds at the time and came across this amazing vocal that perfectly fit the vibe I was going for. I wanted to create a track that DJs could play live, whether at clubs or festivals. The bassline in the production is intentionally heavy—I really wanted it to be a track that could hit hard in the clubs.
After testing it out live a few times, and seeing Alesso drop it at Coachella and other big venues, I realized its potential. The reactions from artists I admire, like John Summit at his album release party, really confirmed it for me.”

“I am so excited for this to be the first solo release on BodyHi from someone other than myself – I

created this label to make and share the music that I am excited about, and John was the first of a few select artists who I really wanted to showcase, especially after our most recent collab. I can’t wait for people to hear this track, and continue seeing John’s development within the BodyHi ecosystem.”
