The story of how April’s Artist Spotlight came about is a bit unique. The previous editions have been about new discoveries, mind-blowing live sets, and unbeatable first impressions. This month’s is about rediscovering an old favorite: Copenhagen, Denmark based trap legend Fabian Mazur. His soaring Trap symphonies are perfect for hyping up the dance floor and getting down. In fact, Fabian Mazur was my introduction to the world of Trap. However, he is not confined to this genre alone, crafting well-produced dance ballads like “Sideways” (feat. Jessica Jarrell),” and “Earn It” feat. Greyson Chance). Fabian Mazur has also teamed up with the equally impressive producer Snavs to create numerous collaborative bangers. Songs like “Spazz Out” blend trap bridges and drops with hip hop vocals. Courtesy of southernwade. The heavier drops hit like dubstep and show off Mazur’s diverse skillset in the studio.
I rediscovered Fabian Mazur after exploring Tisoki’s discography and finding their team effort release, “Can’t Have U.” This sent me down an instant rabbit hole after finishing the Tisoki article. Fabian Mazur hits as hard as ever. Made even better by my increased knowledge of music production. Today I will revisit the first song that I heard by Fabian Mazur: “Don’t Talk About It.”
“Don’t Talk About It” is an explosive track featuring singer/songwriter Neon Hitch as a guest star. The song begins with chimes, gradually evolving synth bars, and Neon Hitch’s chill-inducing vocals. The lyrics are just as intense, describing a tumultuous love pattern that is rarely (if ever) verbally spoken about at all. The partners do not want to make things serious and are alright with keeping things casual. Keeping things where they are by “not talking about” doing so. The line “We ain’t tryna be something that we ain’t meant to be” reiterates this fact. Capturing the desperate longing in the song’s themes.
The instrumentals capture the controlled chaos of this ‘relationship’ very well. Heavy bass floats in space over crash effects and strings. Immediately dropping into Trap territory with sick low ends, crisp hihats, and fuzzy, reverberating BWAHHH effects. Piano notes and clap effects add rhythm and melody. The drops feature rolling, choppy instrumentals. Sharp spirals and shapeshifting synths clash with Neon Hitch’s cerebral vocal chops. Mimicking the inner turmoil of the track’s subjects. The back end of the drops creates a haze that is present throughout the track. Swirling about until the end of the song.
This song and its performance art music video are standouts in my EDM journey. Largely paving my musical journey forward. Returning in full circle moments like this one. The track and video still hold up and I can hear more of the production layers than ever. The intense, lumbering low end still gives me goosebumps. Since I last checked in, Fabian Mazur has released several new singles and a 2024 album titled DUSK. Showing that his presence in the scene is still thriving. He is incredible talented and worthy of the worldwide attention he has received. Fabian Mazur is an international artist worth diving into and I hope I can catch a live set of his soon. Happy Listening!
