YetepMulti-talented artist Fox Stevenson has made a name for himself with his writing, singing, and producing capabilities. He draws inspiration from numerous genres including dubstep, drum & bass, and house. His vocal and song-writing leanings come from his love of pop-punk and alternative rock. Vibe-wise, Fox Stevenson can do it ALL. From dark, brooding tracks like “Killjoy” to the vivid, symbolic brushstrokes of “Like That“, and everything in-between.
Fox Stevenson is back with “Curtain Call,” his second release of 2025! A jazzy, house-heavy adventure with a tropical flair. Like most of his recent releases, “Curtain Call” features Fox Stevenson’s dynamic vocals and knack for symbols and metaphors. However, the symbolism and metaphors do not stop with the lyrics. The instrumentals also follow the track’s title and themes flawlessly.
“Curtain Call” begins with a suspenseful drum fill that expands into a jazzy introduction with saxophones and strumming basslines. Taking on a tropical house swing with starry guitar riffs and unveiling the metaphorical curtain. Popping house drums maintain the rhythm, gradually intensifying into a drop build. The drops freely roll and sway. Dropping us into a rhythmic island paradise.
The lyrics simultaneously cover themes of “wanting safety as a fact” and “taking the power back,” representing the duality consistently present in Fox’s writing style. By my interpretation, “Curtain Call” also serves as a metaphor for breaking illusions. A “curtain call” is a theater term used to describe when the cast comes on stage at the end of a performance. The curtain is shut and applause commences, therefore bringing the cast and audience back to reality. This process serves as a scale to judge level of immersion the audience experienced. The “performers” in Fox’s life are out of time and it is time to face to audience. The lyrics establish that this is a recurring pattern in his life and he is DONE. Fox Stevenson could even be concerned that the curtain may shine a light on himself. Despite this fear, Fox Stevenson is grateful for the curtain’s existence because it represents justice and; “living with this makes no sense at all.”
“Curtain Call” is a great expansion on the sound of Fox Stevenson, while still playing to hits roots and strengths. It has been a while since a house-based Fox Stevenson release and I could not be more excited. Fox’s vocals are silky smooth and float like a cloud to the track’s rhythm. The subversive and symbolic lyrics give deeper insight into the personal philosophy of this talented artist. This unexpected bop is a highlight of Fox Stevenson’s discography and I highly recommend it.
