Ray Volpe Drops His Most Highly Requested ID, ‘PAYBACK’

Fresh off the biggest headline tour of his career, VOLPEVERSE, which concluded in a sold-out night at the Hollywood Palladium and the announcement of his debut album, FOREVER, VOLPETRON, Ray Volpe is just getting started for what’s primed to be his biggest year yet. 

The album’s first single, “GET SMACKED,” which hit half a million streams in under a month, set the tone with an intense fusion of high-intensity dubstep and metal, kicking off this new era with unapologetic energy. Volpe follows up with “PAYBACK,” a track that taps into his bass house makings, delivering an energetic, hard-hitting groove that proves his versatility knows no bounds. The hype around “PAYBACK” has been building for nearly two years, with crowds erupting in unison to the track since 2023. Teased in countless sets and going viral multiple times on Instagram, the ID has become a fan favorite long before its official release. Ray Volpe has made it a staple in his performances, fueling anticipation to an all-time high, now, the wait is finally over.

“PAYBACK” represents Ray Volpe’s versatile production skills and diverse set of influences. A show-stopping track that travels through space, time, and genre with ease. “PAYBACK” features Volpe’s distinct heaviness with a noticeable bass house flare. This is evident from the early seconds of the track. Harmonic ringing goes off over a bumpy bassline and clap effects. Keeping a consistent fist pump throughout. Confident vocals break down the doors, making a grand entrance though a kaleidoscope.

The rolling bassline continues as spirals slice through it with surgical precision. Intense drums and rapid heartbeat bass gradually build into the first drop.

Just kidding… It is a deliciously groovy bass house bridge. The barrage of drums returns with ectoplasmic bubbles to bring forth the drop. Thick, fuzzy bass walls expand and contract over a bass house swing. Complete with robotic warbles, splashy drums, and countless lasers. Volpe flips the script on us with ethereal chimes, followed by a sample of “DROP!!” By Joey Valence and Brae. The laser cannon is loaded before being fired.

This laser shot kicks off a WILD drop that is beyond heavy, yet woven with layers of melody. The supercharged drop concludes, welcoming the vocals back in. The final drop is a shuffle worthy bass house wonderland ready for the next MASSIVE festival set. “PAYBACK” is worthy of the hype put around it and I can see what it has been a massive hit around the country. Ray Volpe’s sound design is masterfully layered and freely jumps between sounds and styles. His extensive knowledge of music production ensures that these genre hops have room to breathe, creating tracks with unexpected twists and turns.
