FRI, APR 11, 2025

The bass scene is reveling right now as bass maestros Tape B and Effin have finally dropped their highly-anticipated collaboration, “Ups and Downs.”

A few weeks ago, Tape B and Effin took to social media to hint at their first collaboration,  sending the bass scene into orbit. The duo’s distinct soundscapes complement each other naturally, merging wobbly synths and retro aesthetics into a track that pushes the boundaries of modern bass music. “Ups and Downs” is a masterful fusion of heavy, experimental sound design and nostalgic undertones, solidifying itself as a must-listen for fans of both artists.

During his sold-out headline debut at the Hollywood Palladium, Tape B played “Ups and Downs,” igniting a huge reaction from the crowd. After sharing the moment on Instagram, fans have been eagerly calling for the official release ever since.

“The dreams I dreamed went up in smoke.”

“Ups and Downs” is simply a gorgeous, chill inducing MASTERPIECE. The instrumentals paint a vivid tapestry made up of several genres and sounds. Its introduction mixes Reggae/Dub with Jazz and distinct Electronic Music undertones. The soulful vocals in ‘Ups and Downs’ also defy era and genre. Effortlessly keeping up with the numerous vibe changes. Hip Hop influences can also be found in the track’s notable bounce and sampling. Weaving more genres into this intricate masterpiece. The Hip Hop samples welcome in the drops and genre-blending moments of “Ups and Downs.”

The track shifts into a starry night sky with a progressive beat that spans constellations. Heavy boom-bap drums balance out the more delicate parts of the song. Giving a solid rhythmic foundation for Tape B and Effin to experiment with. The drops vary in tone and tempo. From thick and ectoplasmic, to sharp and metallic. Some of the drops occur with little to no separation. Creating a fascinating sound dynamic. The final drop is chill and intergalactic. Featuring icy ghosts and alien communication techniques. Meanwhile, the Jazzy elements of “Ups and Downs” give this track section a sunny disposition. These pleasant contradictions and multiple genre shifts help the track live up to its name.

Tape B and Effin have really outdone themselves with “Ups and Downs.” The song is fascinating, well-produced, and has a vintage feel to it. While still sounding modern and HEAVY. This is one of the BEST EDM songs that I have heard in a while. “Ups and Downs” is pretty much flawless and I could not recommend it more. Listen ASAP to blast off on an unforgettable journey.

“Tape B and I have been sending each other ideas for over a year, and it wasn’t until this one that everything clicked. We put this song together in less than a week and it’s a perfect mesh of both of our styles – and you will definitely hear that. We both love how it turned out, enjoy!”
