‘OH YEAHHH!’ LSDREAM x Kotek Cure Your Sweet Tooth with ‘KOOLAID MAN’
The other day I was hanging out with someone during my home visit to Southern California and stumbled upon a new collaboration called “KOOLAID MAN,” featuring LSDREAM and Kotek. The song caught my attention long before I pressed play. The title, cover art, and collaborating artists was enough for me to guarantee an EPIC listening experience! Needless to say, I was far from disappointed.
The track begins with sploinky, distorted wobbles and LSDREAM’s psychedelic fingerprints. The sputtering basslines and plampy drums bust through the wall, just like the song’s namesake. It’s beat circles through the portal depicted on the cover art. The sampling here is immaculate, featuring numerous instances of the Kool-aid Man’s catchphrase: “OH YEAHHH!” Frequencies twist and bend, rapidly changing in tone and sound. Psychedelic guitar riffs can be heard briefly in the first minute and a half, adding more variety to this layered release. A vintage Kool-Aid commercial and wall-shattering effects are spliced in for good measure. Adding further themes to this beverage-inspired BOP! Squeaks, spirals, and intergalactic alarms ring out over the hip-hop drums and sugary-sweet synthesizers. The transitions in this one GO CRAZY. The song’s final drop is brought in by an “OH NOOOO” sample. A direct contrast to the catchphrase. Fading out with an unusual manipulation of the samples.
LSDREAM has always been one of my favorite DJs. He consistently drops bangers that are out of this world. However, this was my introduction to Kotek. This release has made me curious to hear the rest of his discography and catch his sound. I really want to pick out his individual contributions to “KOOLAID MAN” through this research.
