Artist Spotlight : Tom Kench
Tom Kench is an artist out of Minneapolis, Minnesota that I recently discovered. I was introduced to him through “my truth,” a collaboration with local Phoenix artist CASTI. His quirky brand of house features humorous & lowercase song titles and unique production. Tom Kench’s tracks feature addictive melodies, SWEET grooves, and quirky sound elements. He expands upon the house formula, while keeping the genre’s main foundations intact.
“My truth” mixes unconventional samples and razor sharp hi-hats. The samples capture a relationship in turmoil. Arguments and accusations gradually escalate. Rumbling basslines and warping, squeaking spirals toss the whole song into a blender. Meanwhile, “txts i can’t show” meshes house drums with spooky synth lines, sputtering wubs, and the occasional meow. The hook/lyrics are creative and match the song’s haunting atmosphere. Sirens and cymbals are added to the mix, adding additional intricacies to the track.
“Gaslight in every fight. It’s every night. Just some insight. Death threats, compliant Turn violent. Stay silent. Truth we forgo, txts i can’t show.”
Last (but not least) is “sorry call me”. This release is also humorous, carrying on the trend of funny samples and unique sound elements. It begins with a ticking clock and IMMEDIATELY dives into the groove. “Sorry call me” uses music as a metaphor, capturing a desperate yearning for connection. The narrator is stumped on how to proceed, venting his frustration through swagger. There are also plenty of BWAMPS to go around, adding depth to the swaying grooves. Tom Kench is very good at matching and contrasting vibes between the samples, lyrics, and beat.
“I’m caught in your echoes. How do I make it right? I’m running in circles. Missing every sign.”
Tom Kench is an amazing hidden gem of an artist. His discography is diverse, featuring groundbreaking songs that push the boundaries of what genre is capable of. He has cemented himself as a standout artist in my book. I am looking forward to hearing more in the future!
