GRiZ Releases His Bonnaroo Tribute Remix of Rainbow Kitten Surprise’s Iconic Song
Three years after unexpectedly debuting it at Bonnaroo, GRiZ has officially released his remix of Rainbow Kitten Surprise’s beloved anthem, “It’s Called: Freefall,” out now on all platforms.
The release caps a full-circle moment that came earlier this month when RKS frontwoman Ela Melo surprised the crowd at Bonnaroo, joining GRiZ on stage to perform the remix together. In 2023, GRiZ stepped in to fill Rainbow Kitten Surprise’s Bonnaroo performance slot and premiered an unreleased reimagining of the band’s beloved song as a tribute. That moment sealed it, giving fans a strong hint the track was finally going to see an official release.
What makes this remix special is how GRiZ handles the source material. He doesn’t strip away what made the original great. Melo’s vocal stays front and center, but GRiZ surrounds it with his magic touch and cinematic bass, creating moments of pure euphoria.
The remix lands during a busy stretch for GRiZ. Since reemerging in 2025, he has released more than 38 songs across originals, mixtapes, flips, and collaborations while rapidly reestablishing himself as one of electronic music’s defining artists and live performers.
For Rainbow Kitten Surprise, “It’s Called: Freefall” has become a modern alternative classic, now Platinum-certified with over 700 million streams as the band continues to smash it on their Bones World Tour.

The remix is out now. After three years of waiting, it was worth it.
