Revisiting Ganja White Night: 2017 to 2026
Visible soundwaves, lumbering bass, and rattling speakers only begin to describe my first experience with Ganja White Night. Their set at Countdown 2017 was mind-blowing and broke several decibels along the way. GWN gifted me with the loudest set of my life, And I am very grateful. This discovery led me to a whole new world of producers. Artists like Tipper, Jade Cicada, and Pheel. landed on my radar after seeing GWN’s incredible New Year’s set.
The duo has had numerous eras throughout their career, consistently putting out trippy BANGERS! Their earlier work is composed of laid back wobbles and longer, progressive runtimes. Perfect for longer parties and kickbacks. This includes albums like Mystic Herbalist and Addiction. As well as their self-titled debut. Their newer work has become heavier and more condensed. This gives listeners a more direct streamline to the wobbles. Albums like Dark Wobble and The One fall into this category. Meanwhile, Hybrid Distillery contains some of their most eccentric works to date. The whole album is an etherial playground that everyone is invited to. Heavy wobbles blend with chants to create a unique and lasting soundscape.
Revisiting these albums (as well as listening to GWN’s newer releases) has given me a new appreciation for their sound design.
GWN also features several animated visualizers and music video uploads on YouTube, adding new layers to their lore and aesthetic. These videos are immersive and well-animated. Further tying the listener to the experience. This aspect of GWN’s talents truly solidifies their position as veterans in the game. In addition, I discovered many collaborations and guest stars. Numerous songs feature Boogie T and acts like Zeds Dead and Caspa.
Notable highlights from this experience include rediscovering songs like Shipwreck and The Green Lab off of the Dark Wobble album. The latter of which features my second favorite producer SubDocta. The darker nature of this album and its grimy drops quickly shot this album up my rankings list. The emerald green-hues are ever-present in this album and its music videos. These videos drop several new storylines for GWN mascot Mr. Wobble
I was not very familiar with the duo’s earlier work. After my deep dive, songs like Freddy’s Skunk and Jock Horror stuck out, even making the playlist at one of my recent gatherings. The longer runtimes of these songs can fly by due to the sheer immersion they present. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this era of GWN. Binging this albums also lead to similar recommendations, keeping the cycle going. Revisiting this duo after nearly a decade of reflection was a very enjoyable experience.
