10 EDM Artists You Need to See at Outside Lands 2016

Lucky enough to be headed out to the Bay Area this year for Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival?

Outside Lands, like Coachella, has a little bit of everything when it comes to musical headliners. This year’s lineup boasts huge names like Duran Duran, Radio Head and Chance the Rapper, just to name a few. Classic rock and rappers aren’t the only ones who will be taking over Golden Gate Park August 6-9 though. EDM lovers can rest assured that there is plenty of old and new talent to be discovered here.

Although some of these acts are no brainers to catch this year, the fine print names are talent-stacked and entirely worth checking out.

TOKiMONSTA

Friday, August 5, 2:00 PM

Jennifer Lee, or as we know her, TOKiMONSTA, has a broad music taste most likely stemming from her musical upbringing. From indie-electronica to R&B, her vast music scape is one that shouldn’t be missed. TOKiMONSTA also became the first female to join Flying Lotus’ label BRAINFEEDER, which is dominating the LA music scene.

Miike Snow

Friday, August 5, 4:45 PM

Created back in 2007, Miike Snow was created as an idea rather than a band. According to Outside Lands, “It was an experiment: Could you create left-leaning pop music that combined clear, sparse songwriting and hook-laden, muscular mainstream production?” Clearly, their experiment was successful. Their debut album transformed the music scene and encouraged other artists to take more innovative approaches to production, while their sophomore album continued to push boundaries. The group then took a break for a few years, pursuing individual music goals (Christian Karlsson launched Galantis, Andrew Wyatt wrote and produced songs for different artists including Flume), but now the band is back together and recently released their third album, just as impressive as the last two.

Thomas Jack

Friday, August 5, 5:15 PM

Thomas Jack will fill all your tropical house needs. Are you a Kygo lover? Thomas Jack may be just what you need in your life to mellow you out, and will provide a tropical oasis in the midst of the San Francisco fog. Although he is the king of tropical vibes, he’s recently been moving away from this genre. 2016 has turned out to be quite a transitional year for him as he has performed a brand new live set at major festivals like Ultra Music Festival, Coachella, Governor’s Ball, and now Outside Lands.

Jauz

Saturday, August 6, 5:15 PM

This genre blending master will surely get crowds on their feet this year. His mid tempo originals and out of this world remixes are truly remarkable. Over the years, this LA-base producer has received support from big names in the industry including Zedd, Skrillex, Diplo, Borgore, Destructo, and Arty. According to Jauz, “Music knows no boundaries.” His mixes cover a vast array of subgenres so you’re bound to love something he dishes out at Outside Lands.

Zedd

Saturday, August 6, 8:40 PM

MTV named him their “Artist to Watch” in 2013, and in know time he became the electronic artist that nearly everyone knew. Since 2009, Zedd has been bringing us some of EDM’s greatest hits. “Clarity” and “Break Free” topped charts, while his “Moment of Clarity Tour” sold out venues across the globe. But Zedd is still on the rise, his recent collab with Kesha was one of his most impactful.

Oh Wonder

Sunday, August 7, 1:15 PM

Although Oh Wonder lays more within the alternative genre, this duo has fashioned songs worthy of remixes from some of our favorites: Illenium and Louis the Child. The originals are definitely worth a listen too, along with all of Oh Wonder’s other chill-wave tracks.

Snakehips

Sunday, August 7, 2:00 PM

Snakehips, who will also be making an appearance at Mad Decent Block Party here in Phoenix, will be bringing plenty of vibes with them to Golden Gate Park. Although Snakehips is fairly new to the industry, these two London natives have made waves with their groovy-chill remixes and their single “All My Friends” ft. Tinashe and Chance the Rapper (who will also be making an appearance at Outside Lands) is one that none of us can forget.

GRiZ

Sunday, August 7, 5:05 PM

Lovers of that future funky vibe, rejoice. GRiZ will be blessing the foggy city with plenty of funk and fresh beats. The king of blending genres released his critically acclaimed album “Say It Loud” in 2015 which was ambitious but naturally worked for this Michigan based DJ. Expect much more to come from GRiZ in upcoming years, and watch him grow for yourself as he takes the stage at Outside Lands this year.

RÜFÜS DU SOL

Sunday, August 7, 5:55 PM

If you’re a fan of Odesza, Rüfüs is the newest addition to their Foreign Family Collective, and one that stands out for sure. Their sophomore album Bloom proved that they did just that: bloomed into the dreamy-chill music producers that we love to vibe with. According to Outside Lands, some of the band’s inspiration for Bloom came from abstract things, like filling their computer screens with underwater photography, which may be why most of their album feels as if you are floating underwater.

Major Lazer

Sunday, August 7, 6:25 PM

Two-time Grammy Award winning Diplo and fellow producers Jillionaire and Walshy Fire make up the electronic music group we all know and love: Major Lazer. Major Lazer’s distinct sound combines elements of Jamaican style reggae with electro house, creating a vibe that is unique and perfect for a laidback evening in San Francisco. Not only has the trio topped charts with their releases, but their single “Lean On,” featuring DJ Snake and Mø, become the most successful independently released song of all time. Diplo was also the most Shazamed artist of 2015.
