YetepGRiZ holds the top spot as my all-time favorite DJ, and the mastery displayed in his productions never fails to leave me in awe. Beyond his undeniable command over the bass and funk genres, GRiZ’s dedication to honing every intricate aspect of his craft is evident in the creation of truly exceptional songs. While GRiZ may not frequently engage in collaborations, when he does, it results in an authentic fusion of two artists’ styles, yielding a plethora of outstanding tracks. In this article, I’ll be exploring five of my favorite GRiZ collaborations, and I hope you enjoy the musical journey!
“Medusa” by GRiZ, Wreckno
Kicking off with the monumental collaboration featuring Wreckno, “Medusa” is more than just a song—it’s an anthem crafted with the LGBTQ community in mind. The song’s meaning is inherently golden, and the production takes it to another level. With Wreckno delivering sassy and catchy vocals, the space bass drop reverberates in the higher pitch range, making it a standout track that conquered spin studios and parties alike. If you’re a fan of space bass, this song is a must-listen.
“Ecstasy of Soul” by GRiZ, Zeds Dead
As GRiZ transitioned into the bass scene, “Ecstasy of Soul” emerged as the track that, in my opinion, solidified his presence. Collaborating with bass legends Zeds Dead for their debut b2b set at Goldrush Festival, the collaboration struck gold. Built on the foundation of “Ecstasy of Gold,” the melody is transformed into something devastating. With a deep buildup, the iconic “GRiZ Yeah Zeds Dead” echoes, and shortly after, the bass comes in, reverberating with beautiful high-pitched arpeggios flying overhead. For bass enthusiasts, this track should undoubtedly be on your radar.
“Open Your Mind” by GRiZ, Big Gigantic
Teaming up with Big Gigantic for a track featured on the Brighter Future album, GRiZ and Big Gigantic showcased the funky side of bass. Within the first 30 seconds, a quick buildup sets the stage for a funk-guided drop, with bass accents tearing into space and providing the song with multiple dimensions. The real magic happens in the third drop—an ominous buildup leads to a piercing elongated bass note seamlessly evolving into the melody, truly transporting your soul to space.
“Ease Your Mind” by GRiZ, Ganja White Night
The collaboration between GRiZ and Ganja White Night stands out as an exemplar of both artists’ versatility. Featuring three distinct yet cohesive drops, the first is a funky bass-driven masterpiece with Ganja White Night’s signature growls. The second drop, classically funky with live instruments, sets the tone for a wonderful dance, while the third drop, a space bass meets funk meets bass combination, stands out as one of the best dancefloor materials available.
Closing this list is GRiZ’s iconic collaboration with LSDREAM, who has undeniably catapulted into the spotlight this year. The first drop introduces another bass-driven funk beat, this time with downbeats reminiscent of fish diving deep. The second drop, with an emphasis on rhythm-based funk, employs excellent rhythm switches throughout. The closing section features a heavy funky drop with incredible chords on the downbeats, truly showcasing their skills. What a song to conclude this remarkable collaboration journey!
