Pauline Herr is a hypnotic and multi-talented artist currently making a HUGE splash in the EDM scene. She is in charge of every aspect of music production, giving her executive control over the creative process. This results in beautiful, well-crafted songs with lots of detail and intricacies. Pauline Herr is currently scheduled to perform at Darkstar Tempe this Saturday, April 20th. The show is 21+ with tickets available HERE!
Pauline’s track “Ghost” mixes pop sensibilities with laid-back dubstep to create a melodic tale of independence, self-reliance, and acceptance. These themes are inter-spliced with brief moments of longing, especially during the final bridge: “maybe there is something missing in this world when I’m not next to you. Is happiness real if it’s not shared?”
These moments of longing are acknowledged and reconciled with, as Pauline states that she will “Do just fine here on my own.”
“Ghost” perfectly captures the complicated nature of the human experience and the complex emotions/situations that we find ourselves experiencing daily. Pauline Herr’s vocals are both beautiful and haunting, living up to the the song’s name and themes. She is consistently being followed by the spirit of her aforementioned love, making it much more difficult to let go and be fully independent from them. This is one possible interpretation of the lyrics. In fact, I have a second theory. This song could also be interpreted as a metaphor for evolving as a person and attempting to leave your old self behind, while struggling to fully let go of the past. The duality and shifting perspectives in the lyrics may be explained by this theory. Music is a beautiful thing and can be left up to interpretation. This is a gorgeous song with harmonious vocals and a chill backing beat. Perfect for slow dancing with a “Rave Bae” or significant other.
“Friends” is a gorgeous interlude that begins with a beautiful, classic piano intro, subtle percussion and raining sound effects. Pauline’s vocals come in right on cue, with a distorted vocal sample backing her up.
“You don’t want to be friends, but I can’t just let it end. Yeah. I don’t want to give up what we had just because it is not the same anymore. For me now.”
Glistening vocal effects swirl around Pauline’s every word like a wandering star. Her vocals, instrumentals, and samples are perfectly layered, resulting in a well-produced track. The classic piano intro is then greeted by subtle drum effects, as the same soothing vocal effects continue in the background.
“All the memories we share yeah I’ll keep them in my hands, I don’t want for this to end. But I’ve got to let you go,” sings Pauline in a yearning tone.
This song is a perfect interlude and bridge between the two halves of her album. The phone lights and lighters would out in full force for a live performance of “Friends,” especially if Pauline chooses to do the vocals live. Don’t miss your chance to see an incredible rising start rock an intimate venue like Darkstar Tempe.
