Since moving to Phoenix, I have fallen in love with House and Techno. House music has recently been a hyper fixation of mine and I’ve been on a discovery spree. House music has groove, swag, and style. There is also a hidden sense of humor within some House tracks, leading to hilarious and memorable releases. This list will cover some of my favorite random House Music discoveries. Aside from the first entry, this list is not in any particular order. ENJOY!
“Metaphysical” is the second track from Ship Wrek‘s 2022 EP of the same name and a certified BOP! Discovering this song was the inspiration for this list.
The swanky House beat bounces along with Bipolar Sunshine’s buttery smooth vocals. These vocals are especially highlighted on the song’s pre chorus and verses. “Good Vibrations. You’re sensa- sensational.” The narrator describes being fascinated and intimidated by someone on the dance floor. Trying to stay calm and not lose their nerve. “Metaphysical” also (naturally) features metaphors about Cinderella and sweat-dodging umbrellas. The warping instrumentals give the narrator a canvas to dance with the person who got their attention. A perfect House club anthem for your next get together.
“I like how you movin’ cross the room. Tryna keep it all correct and keep it cool… Good Vibrations. You’re sensa- sensational”
“Thumbs” by Steve Darko and Uncle Kev is one of the funniest House songs (if not EDM) songs that I have ever heard. The wobbling, beat is wrapped around a deep vocal sample and and elegant loop. Claps and taps keep the rhythm on top of a liquid bassline. The vocals stun the listener by asking life’s biggest questions:
“Have you seen my friends? I think I’ve lost them.. Have you seen my thumbs? I think I’ve lost them.. Have you seen my hands? My hands are handsy.”
“LET’S DANCE!”
These humorous verses break into rolling House breaks with electric surges weaving in and out. The beat is a perfect blend of House, Jazz, and Hip Hop influences, capturing the broad genre compatibility that House Music has in spades. The funny lyrics and concept show that producer can make some serious art, while not taking themselves too seriously. This fun energy shows and transfers to the listener throughout the song’s runtime. ENJOY!
This DIRTYBIRD exclusive by frequent Relentless Beats guest OMNOM is a swanky, confident jam with subtle basslines and drums. Stretchy sounds contort around a solid rhythm section and perfectly timed synths. The latter half of “Fo Free” features ice-cold instrumentals, sandwich-munching sound effects, and warbling alarms. The grounded rhythm section gives this track space to be experimental. Balancing the pleasant absurdity going on around it. Showcasing OMNOM’s incredible production skills. This is simply a fun, finger wagging bop worthy of being on repeat.
“I don’t give it up for free, that’s just the way it has to be!”
Now THIS is a collaboration that I didn’t know I needed. Ookay & JSTJR are two artists known for mind-blowing live sets and versatile production abilities. “All I Wanna Do” captures the high-energy vibes of the dance floor and the free spirit that floats throughout it. The lyrics perfectly describe the high-octane nature of late night raves, and the desire to never stop dancing. No matter the setting or circumstances.A low-end, rumbling introduction with wriggling frequencies breaks into a hi-hat filled drops. A wormhole opens towards the last minute of the song, building anticipation for the track’s final valleys. This celebratory collaboration is fun to throw on at functions any time of year.
“Every night. Every day. All I Wanna Do is dance. At the club, at the party. I just can’t control it. I’m dancing.”
Yes, OMNOM is making his second appearance on the list. His live sets and bop-filled discography largely inspired my journey into a House Head. This time, we will cover “Bees” a collaboration with Australian producer Odd Mob. “Bees” is another track that dives into the humorous side of House. The sample that the song revolves around is from the Nicholas Cage movie, “The Wicker Man.” The bonus scene it references has become a meme since the film’s release. This collaboration with Odd Mob uses the scene as a direct influence on the beat. “Bees” begins with bouncing bass, kicks and hi hats. A searchlight beam gradually rings out. Transforming into a buzzing wall of sound like a swarm of bees. The famous Nicholas Cage quote plays in the background of the prebuild as the swarm begins to scatter. Shuffling drums and buzzing synths duke it out over House basslines. Mimicking the sounds bees in a surprising number of ways. The song ends on a mellow note with subdued buzzes and prominent drums.
