Relentless Beats

International Discovery Series: Piezo (Italy)

I have been learning Italian since December of last year and have been very curious about the music and culture of Italy. I dove headfirst into Italian rock, pop, and rap and it has been a lot of fun. These Italian songs feature the core elements of the genre, with a pleasant Italian twist. Some songs are entirely in Italian, some are in English, while others feature a mix of both. However, one Italian-spun genre has eluded me: ELECTRONIC!

The first Italian EDM artist that I encountered was Piezo, out of Milan. His abstract and eccentric production style pushes the boundaries of genre and gives us insight into what Italian DJs have to offer.

Deepa” was the first Piezo song that I heard and I was INSTANTLY hooked. “Deepa” blends old school drum beats, vibrant house synth, and pleasant intergalactic wobbles. Chimes, lasers, and thick bass are woven throughout. Record scratch effects add to the song’s old school feel, like Piezo is mixing right in front of you. It also features unique ping-pong effects that warp into rising bass waves.

The six and a half minute runtime of “Deepa” goes by QUICK. This is because of its intricate details, impressive layering, and diverse sound pallet. “Deepa” would sound especially great on a record player and I hope that a vinyl version exists.

Bborn Again” is a fascinating collaboration featuring Piezo, Dj Plead and DJ Python. This lineup forms a collective known as PPP. “Bborn Again” has an incredibly diverse sound that blends tribal drums, atmospheric chirps, and sounds out of a vintage outer space themed video game. Notes of House and Trance are also added to mix. This creates an incredibly immersive experience and an incredible genre-bender. In fact, this song is so immersive that I made it through five minutes of the 6:45 runtime without realizing it.

LSD Superhero” gets an honorable mention based on the title alone. This track is mesmerizing from the start, fading in like a psychedelic snowstorm. Heavy drums blend with chunky basslines and crisp, progressive synth. Drums bounce off of drums, which is an impressive sound design move that I have never heard before. The rest of “LSD Superhero” is an indescribable experience that I will leave as a pleasant surprise to you.

Piezo’s progressive and immersive songs are perfect for reflection and introspection. The longer runtime of his songs fly by and keep you guessing throughout. His old school vibe and skilled production style sound like live mixes, showing off this incredible artist’s creative nature. FANTASTICO!
