I still remember the first time I saw Steve Aoki live. It was at Verizon Wireless Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana. He was already playing when I walked over, and I just stood there memorized by his performance. I remember it being loud and he had so much energy… Jumping around on stage, spraying the crowd with champagne, and jumping off the stage trusting the crowd would catch him. They did and the performance was truly unforgettable. Now, the older I get, when he releases something, I pay attention always going back to the first time I saw him perform.
Last week he released Neon Future I, a collection of unique collection of dance music featuring some of the biggest bands in their respective genres, including rap and R&B. The release features names like Fall Out Boy, will.i.am, Waka Flocka Flame and Chris Lake, and from track to track keeps you wanting more. “Back To Earth,” the single featuring Fall Out Boy, might be my favorite mostly because I am a huge fan of Fall Out Boy, but more because Aoki finds a way to work with any artist of any genre.
In an effort to promote the new release, Steve is sitting down for interviews to talk about the future of dance music. In this interview he talks with futurist Ray Kurzweil about how technology will shape our future in terms of creativity. He talks about things like artificial intelligence and singularity. “The future is intriguing. It’s like a snake shedding its skin.”
A sequel is scheduled to be released in the winter of 2015. It is said to be having a song named “Horizons,” which will feature Linkin Park. I am sure Aoki will find a way to make it sound incredible.
