YetepAs the years go by, electronic music is incessantly becoming a prominent media feature and a burgeoning mecca of marketability. In recent years we have seen electronic music rise from bootleg tracks being released online, to massive 100,000 people festivals, to marketing campaigns using DJs as the face of a company, to television shows like FXX’s “Major Lazer”, to films like the upcoming “We Are Your Friends” starring Zac Efron. The market has taken electronic music from the underground to the mainstream and there is a story behind that.
This is not necessarily that story, but it has a lot of relevance in regards to what I have stated. Electronic music has stapled a certain profoundness to the minds of the public. In 2014, a film entitled “Eden”, made its way into the festival circuit and ended up making an appearance at the coveted Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. “Eden” follows the story of a DJ duo consisting of Paul and Stan, and their contributions to the development of the electronic genre, The French Touch.

However, what makes this film special is that it is a love letter to the illustrious duo, Daft Punk, and a film commemorating their rise to fame. The film is loosely based on the rise of Daft Punk, featuring a parallel story line to that of Paul and Stan, and even features characters Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, the men under the masks. In addition, the film features a soundtrack of almost entirely Daft Punk music. Although it took filmmaker, Mia Hansen-Love, quite a while to secure the rights to Daft Punks music library, she was able to do so with the help of her brother and writer, Sven Hansen-Love. Sven, having been at the party where they first played “Da Funk”, is a good friend of the DJ duo and was able to secure each song for a meager $3,700, a far cry from the million dollars they would normally ask. The filmmakers have also stated that Thomas and Guy will appear in the film in unspecified roles.
Not only is electronic music making a huge marketability leap in the entertainment industry as a whole, but its story is important enough to share with the world through a medium like independent film. Electronic music is clearly resonating with individuals; people want to send out the message of the power of music and what better way to do that than through the music of legends like Daft Punk. With “Eden”, not only are we further evidencing the fact that electronic music is a growing industry that is not soon to subside, but we also get to witness history through the eyes of musical demigods.
“Eden” will be making its way to theaters in New York and Los Angeles on June 19th. It has not been confirmed yet when we will be able to see it here in Arizona, but based on electronic music’s popularity, it shouldn’t be too far behind!
