Relentless Beats

The Relentless Beat of the Week: NGHTMRE & Boombox Cartel – “Aftershock”

This weekend was stacked. STACKED! Just take a deep breath before you start reading this because if you don’t run out of breath while reading the enormous list of talent, the magnitude that each of their names hold certainly will finish the job for you. Check it out: At Global Dance Fest we brought you Big Gigantic, Cashmere Cat, Deorro, Gener8ion, Gesaffelstein, Marshmello, Mija, NGHTMRE, RL Grime, SBCR, Sweater Beats, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, and some of the best local talent we have in the valley. Then, TONIGHT, we have another enormous list of talent both on Mill Avenue and at the Monarch including Slander, Boombox Cartel, another performance by Mija, and a killer set by 12th Planet. Catch your breath, I know it was exhausting.

So with that said, it is only appropriate that this week’s Relentless Beat of the Week go out to not one, but two of the artists we had performing this weekend. This was NGHTMRE‘s second time in Phoenix this year and we couldn’t be happier, while the second artist on this phenomenal track, Boombox Cartel, will be playing two sets tonight, one in front of Slander and Mija, the other opening for 12th Planet. The track I am referring to is the fresh melodic trap anthem, “Aftershock”, which was released via Mad Decent about a week ago.

“Aftershock” is something a bit different from both of these artists. The track starts off with a melodic hip-hop sound, reminiscent of classic rap ballads. The collaboration quickly develops into something much more upbeat, but still ethereal in the sense that its not time to bang our heads, but rather time to groove and let the music wash over. Finally, we get what we came for with a raw drop that is bound to get the earth moving under our feet. The song encompasses many different sounds that could stand on their own, but these masterful mixers blend the sounds so flawlessly that we are treated to an eclectic track that feels remarkably unified.

Don’t miss NGHTMRE’s latest with Flosstradamus, “Lighters Up”, which dropped on Friday. Also, be sure to get lit with Boombox Cartel at the Mill Ave Block Party, Game Day Tour at Monarch Theatre, or both, on Saturday Night following the Rivalry Match between ASU and U of A!
