November 20, 2024
It’s been a while since I’ve typed up an EDMovie Round-Up, but there is just an abundance of fresh video’s coming out lately, I felt it would be appropriate to bring it back before the holiday season. In the past months there have been excellent videos from the likes of Dillon Francis with “Bun Up the Dance”, The Chainsmokers with “Waterbed”, ZHU gave us a video for his much anticipated collaboration with Skrillex, and Skrillex even put out one of the biggest videos of the year with his remix of GTA‘s “Red Lips” exclusively on Apple Music. You can expect an article on that in the near future.
With this column’s selections, I have decided to show off some videos that have a uniqueness to each of them, as well as one’s that showcase the talents of some artists who will be coming through town in the next couple of months. This time around we have work from Madeon and Tommy Trash, who will be coming through in January and for Decadence, respectively. We also have some very interesting pieces from Nero, who takes on anime for their latest production, and from Rustie who gives us a visual record of nature through the eyes of a VHS tape. Finally, we get a video previewing what is to come from the upcoming Steve Angello album, Wild Youth, which is set to drop on January 22nd. Lets get to it!
Madeon – “Nonsense”
Off of his debut album Adventure, the video for the uplifting Madeon track “Nonsense” follows a couple as they traverse through a middle eastern desert and endure all the hardships that the vicious landscape throws their way. From limited sense of direction to cold nights to unrelenting sandstorms, this couple must make sense of their situation and adventure to their ultimate destination. Shot in the deserts just outside of Dubai, the video is reminiscent in style both to the PS3 video game “Journey” and to the classic film “Wizard of OZ”. “Nonsense” is a video that is indicative of the adventures that all of us face in life and how we all experience these adventures together.

Tommy Trash – Love U Giv EP Video Series
So this is interesting. What Tommy Trash has done with his latest EP Luv U Giv is created a 3-part video series that follows a group of ken doll pirates who are animated with stop-motion as they journey onto an island filled with suspicious barbie mermaids. The story is told through dialogue cards, much like the old silent films of the 1920s, but unlike those films, we get some deep house music and a lot of colors. The style of the video (paper, stop-motion, glitter, clay) combines a unique mix of ingredients including humor, creativity, adventure, and a hint of terror. Make that a lot of terror.
As the story progresses, the playful violence gets more and more disturbed, with doll limbs being torn off, head being decapitated, and even faces melting. As the sailors try to escape from the treacherous island full of hellbent barbies, there are twists and turns that make for a compelling, albeit neurotic story. But what else do you expect from Tommy Trash? I’ll tell you what to expect… Tommy Trash.

Rustie – “First Mythz”
This video is stunning to put it simply. Rustie takes us on a journey through the eyes of father time. He presents to us the world as we know it, but in a way that evokes a sense of nostalgia. By using what would seem to be footage shot on a tape-based video camera, we are teleported to a time when everything seemed easier. Technology was not yet omnipresent and by focusing on nature in the shots, it is almost a sense of relief to be free of it all (despite the fact you are likely watching this on your laptop). The video editing is fast paced and moves to the music, big props to Daniel Swan who has done an excellent job with the timing of this video. Get lost in the past and in the world with “First Mythz”.

Nero – “Into the Night”
I suppose the theme this week is animation, for the next video is the 4th animated piece that we have. With “Into the Night” Nero takes on the world of anime, over-exaggerated physical attributes and all. What I love about this one is how well the lyrics actually go to the story of the video. It is almost as if Alana is singing through the voice of the character. We are treated to a high-octane story of crime, betrayal, and romance. “Baby, let’s drive into the night. Pack your bags and go. Leave it all behind.” With an enemy on your tail, sometime all you can do is run and hope they never find you, but you can’t leave behind the one’s you love. With special anime appearances by Nero themselves, this is a special video that I could watch again and again.

Steve Angello – Remember
Remember The Goonies? Remember Stand by Me? Remember being a kid? Life is full of the moments that you take for granted until you truly look back and realize how fond of memories those moments were. That’s what this video is all about. How as we grow older we become more and more independent. When we were young we had our friends, we had adventure, we formed memories that made us into the person we are today, and without these instances perhaps we would have ended up differently. There is an allusion to this being a very personal story for Steve Angello, using the motif of fire and an aged piano to indicate a link etween past and present. Check it out and form you own opinion of the symbolism in this touching video.

Stay tuned for more EDMovie Round Ups in the future and also don’t miss it when Madeon and Tommy Trash make their way through the Valley of the Sun. You can catch Madeon at the Marquee Theatre in January, while Tommy Trash joins the lineup of the biggest show AZ has seen at Decadence NYE with Jack U, Odesza, Above & Beyond, Crizzly, Dieselboy, No Mana, Rezz and many more!
