Soul Clap is an American DJ/production duo from Boston, Massachusetts. They are one of the few artists in the EDM scene to play and produce mostly Funk and Disco. For of this reason, Soul Clap has an incredible fan base from both the EDM and Funk worlds. Since the formation of the duo in 2001, Cynce and Elyte of Soul Clap have been showing their fans all over the world their impressive repertoire: vinyl mixing, multi-genre performance, and highly sophisticated music production (sound engineering and mastering). Recently they released a podcast mix for the BPM Festival and named it “Crew Love On the Beach”, after the record label in which they are a part of, Crew Love Records. Check out the “Crew Love On the Beach” mix.
This mix showcased their entire skill set, which is the reason it is chosen for the week’s RBDeep In the Mix. With the combination of Funk, Disco, Jazz, Soul, and chill House, this mix is a roller coaster ride of emotions. Soul Clap started the mix with a few old-school funky Disco tracks and let the audience boogie to the nice and slow, yet punchy beats of Disco. An example is a track from the early ’80s, “Estrellar” by Marcos Valle. Half way through the mix, Soul Clap played another Disco track that featured a Michael Jackson’s voice sample from “Rock with You”, called “Sunlight” from Kon & the Gang, and that basically sums up how Disco this mix is. After a few more Funk tracks, they started to introduce a few jazzy, soulful and chill House tracks, including a few they produced themselves. A few examples are “(I Know) What You Want” from Andras & Oscar, FSP’s Break the Funk (David Marston Remix), and Love Train by Soul Clap & Pillow Talk featuring Crew Love. The best thing about Soul Clap in general and this mix in specific is the smooth and impeccable transition between genres. Their signature technique is to add a Jazz or Funk sample as the bridge to make the passage between two completely different genres, making the transition seamless and interesting.
In the last few years, Soul Clap’s success had seen an exponential growth. Last weekend, they had the opportunity to play at their biggest festival yet, Coachella. They will be making their way over to Phoenix this Saturday April 23 at Bar Smith to play for RBDeep. I’m excited to see these guys for the first time and to hear the music they have been working on.
