YetepThere are times producers step out of their role as music-makers to become something even more incredible: change-makers.
In March, Ookay released his single “Thief,” which was something different than we would expect from a trap producer. “Thief” is sax-filled and paired with Ookay’s very own smooth-sounding vocals.
With over 2.5 million streams on SoundCloud, “Thief” has worked its way into our hearts. Ookay told Billboard in a Q&A session, “I’m quite shocked by the love it has received due to it being so different from my past work.”
And now, Ookay has released quite an inspiring music video for “Thief.” Check it out below:
Ookay- Thief
Ookay posted the video on his Facebook page and said, “Given the recent tragedy in Orlando, I wanted to use my first music video as a way to spread the positive message that love knows no bounds. In a world filled with hate, all we have is love. #loveislove.”
He also said in a statement to Billboard, “As someone who spends the majority of my time in nightclubs trying to bring people together through music, it resonated deeply with me that someone tried to take that safe place away from us all. I wanted to send a message with this video that I truly believe in.”
The video is artsy, colorful, and breath-taking all at the same time. What really makes it stand out though, is the message behind it. It’s refreshing to see a producer, who clearly has the media’s attention, use that attention to take a stance on important national issues. Music is an escape which we often use to forget about what is going on in the “real world,” but sometimes it’s important to open our eyes and see the problems affecting our world today so that we too can stand up for what is right. It’s safe to say, Ookay opened eyes with this video and meaning behind it.
Ookay ended his statement with Billboard by stating, “Nobody should have any fear when it comes to loving someone regardless of gender or race.”
