The Fk A Genre Lineup Doesn’t Give a Fk About Genres

Amber “Mija” Giles was raised here in Phoenix, and moved to LA to pursue her music, where she discovered her ability to incorporate different styles in her music. She grew up listening to happy hardcore and drum’n’bass, got into deep house and techno as she got older, and discovered a love for trap and hip-hop when she moved to LA, and now she’s bringing it all on tour with her. Mija decided to create a tour titled ‘Fk A Genre’ where she could incorporate artists of all different genres, and allow them to bend the rules resulting in one big party.

She told RollingStone in an interview:

Initially the concept came from a mixtape I made a couple years ago, basically when I first moved to L.A. and I was submerged into all sorts of music styles and cultures that were different from where I was originally from, Phoenix. I wanted to figure out how to incorporate them into my sets and the shows that I played. The mixtape ended up being really successful, so I kind of wanted to take this concept and make it bigger, and kind of bring people to parties that wouldn’t necessarily be into that party normally. It gave artists free range to do whatever they wanted to do, and not what their normal fan base expected. I think that ended up being really successful, and that’s what made it so fun, that people didn’t know what to expect.

Mija’s tour will feature lots of artists like A-Trak, Lunice, Anna Lunoe, Justin Martin, Kill the Noise, and, as the site claims, “whoever shows up ;).” At her stop here in her home town she is bringing along Jack Beats, Nosaj Thing, Rob Garza, Ardalan, and Durante.

These artists can be considered to not give a fk about genres as they tend to push the boundaries in their creations, therefore being perfect performances for her to bring along on tour. OWSLA‘s duo Jack Beats strive to incorporate a vast array of different genres into their music to create their own sound and shared on OWSLA’s website that “It’s all in the influences, there’s always room for a drum n bass, breakbeat, or an old rave riff, or a vintage house sample.”

Nosaj Thing started at a young age and has produced music for artists like Kendrick Lamar, Kid Cudi, and Chance The Rapper and released his first solo creations in 2006. Nosaj thing has a unique sound to his work as he combines elements of ambient and ethereal sounds of synthesizers, drum and bass rhythms, and electronic hip-hop.

Rob Garza also has something distinct to bring on the tour as he serves as founding member of international music group Thievery Corporation, and decades of experience as a pioneer of a flourishing electronic music movement. With his infusion of electronic music with the international flavors of dub, trip hop, reggae, and bossa nova, I think he will be turning heads at Mija’s show.

Ardalan will be bringing some harder bass sounds on the tour while managing to maintain the element of surprise throughout his sets. With a fresh perspective on music genesis, his mixes and sets are known for  their sass, energy and wickedly wry samples. Ardalan has produced multiple tracks with Justin Martin that were charted by Diplo, Jesse Rose, and Dog Blood (Skrillex and Boyz Noize), and an EP with Dirtybird, receiving praise from lots of big names as well.

Last but not least joining the Fk A Genre AZ stop is Durante. Max Durante started his dj career in rome serving as one of the hinge’s of the 90’s italian techno rave generation. This guy is well respected as a dj for his impressive mixing abilities, as well as a producer for his precious creativity in his recording productions.

Don’t miss out on Mija’s one of a kind party delivering the beauty of genre-bending at The Pressroom on November 23rd.
