Right on the heels of their massive RAM Records release “Kill Room” the British duo Delta Heavy are headed on a colossal World Tour across 3 continents commencing this past weekend, October 28th in Toronto, Canada.
The Drum & Bass pioneers are in the midst of a sensational year, having released their debut album “Paradise Lost” in March, and follow up “White Flag” EP at the end of May. Looking to bring their infectious energy on the road, Ben Hall & Simon James are shipping off on an ambitious 10 date American tour, starting in Minneapolis and ending in Seattle on New Years Eve. Come mid January, the boys will be heading to New Zealand for a 4-gig stint, then hopping over to Australia, closing their tour out down under on the 28th of January. With a select few shows in Canada, Denmark, Mexico, and the UK, with more to be announced, the tour will truly be both extensive and worldly.
Those unable to attend a gig can tune into Delta Heavy’s brand new show via iHeart Radio (US only) Paradise Lost Radio. The production is based on the duo’s debut album, and will feature the very best in Drum & Bass/Bass Music for 1 hour. Paradise Lost Radio is on iHeart Radio & Evolution, which broadcasts to an astonishing ¼ of a billion listeners each month. If you want go ahead and check out iHeart Radio right here at this link. Additionally check them out on BBC radio right here.
We also got to sit down with Delta Heavy and ask them questions about their recent success, new tracks, and upcoming tour. Check out what they had to say in the section below!
Simon and Ben, how did the duo behind Delta Heavy originally meet?
We met through mutual friends while studying in Nottingham and were both DJing. When we finished our courses and moved to London we both decided that producing and DJing seemed like a more attractive option than an office job so we set to work learning how to produce music.
So why Drum & Bass?
It’s very different to other dance music which is what was initially attractive. Loads of energy and complicated rhythms and overdriven modulating bass all incredibly carefully crafted. It was our daily diet leading up to university and throughout. There was such a strong scene in Nottingham that we were lucky to be exposed to the best music and DJs on a weekly basis so it fuelled the fire.
You’ve just released your track “Kill Room” not too long ago and it’s currently the only DnB song on the beatport 100 right now, how do you feel seeing such great success in your song?
It’s great! It’s not often that DnB breaks the top 100 on beatport so it’s cool that it has connected with people.
What separates this track from your other pieces of work you’ve written so far?
Nothing specific to be honest! We write a variety of tempos and styles so it’s not out of character to do something like this which isn’t far away from ‘Oscillator’ or ‘Event Horizon’ but after the album we wanted our first couple of releases to be dark and heavy. It was inspired by an old tune by Phace called Reservoir which has a really intense breakdown using an awesome synth/brass sound pitching up and down. Using this inspiration we created our own idea and then made the drop which switches to an aggressive, driving roller. I used to love the TV show Dexter and though it fitted the vibe so mixing that dark/psycho concept and samples with the music matched perfectly and also handed us the name ‘Kill Room’, where Dexter murders all of his victims.
Tell us about this massive World Tour you’ve just announced, you guys are literally covering a large portion of the map here, where are you most excited to go play in?
We’re heading for the US and Australia mostly over the next couple of months with some European and UK shows sprinkled in between. We’re actually back in Nottingham this weekend which is always a great throwback to the old days! Highlights over the next few months are Beta in Denver, which is also this weekend, Puerto Rico, Vancouver & Chicago all look like being excellent, and then the Australia and New Zealand tour ending in Perth which is always one of the best shows of the year. We’ll be bringing in the new year in Brixton and Seattle.
A lot of people say that “dubstep is dead” with drum and bass being a style of music fairly close to dubstep, how much of that applies to drum and bass in the United States?
Dubstep isn’t really dead in the US. It has morphed slightly and I think there is this combination of artists playing and producing Dubstep, Trap and Future Bass which is keeping the scene strong. For us we’re as busy in the US as we’ve ever been but we’ve always fused DnB with other genres in our American sets because the combination works really well for that audience. There are areas in the US which have really good dnb scenes like California, Denver and all over Canada.
Any other new music our fans can look forward to seeing?
Our next single Bar Fight is dropping at the beginning of December and we’ll be teasing some audio really soon!
Closing 2016 out with a bang, Delta Heavy’s year ending World Tour will be one of their most comprehensive and impressive efforts to date. Find your city in the tour dates above, and stay up to date with Delta Heavy via their socials!
