YetepVancouver native Nathan Shaw, known as Ekali on stage, is gifted in moving through different genres with ease, sometimes pulling at the tear ducts of audiences, and sometimes blasting heavy-hitting beats through his speakers to heighten then energy. On either end of the spectrum, there’s meticulous attention to his sound design and an infusion of melodic synths and often harmonious vocals. He weaves so easily through these differing energies of music that it’s hard to keep your emotions straight. One of his more recent tracks, “Be Fine,” is a testament to his gentler melodic tastes. See his music video for this week’s Watch it Wednesday below.
Wafia’s crooning vocals melt together with Ekali’s sleepy beat and emotive synths, which come to life on the screen for this music video. Wafia and a man are seen on the rooftop of a garage in a car, where their meeting slowly eases into a confrontation. Wafia sings into the camera with a forlorn expression, assuring herself that after a while she’ll “be fine.” It’s a bittersweet video to accompany a bittersweet song, while is as always beautifully sad in its sound.
Ekali will be bringing his A World Away tour to The Van Buren on February 22nd. You can find your tickets here.
