YetepA standout talents in modern-day bass music, Papa Khan has quickly caught the attention of fans and fellow producers around the world.
In 2020, the Indonesian-based producer made his live debut on the Malignant Music presents “Marauda and Friends for Bassrush Showcase” live stream. The entire audience, including Marshmello, was immediately captivated by his unique sound, leading to an EP release on Marshemello’s label, Joytime Collective. He’s been quickly climbing the ranks since. Earlier this year he released Never Cared” on Monstercat, and will soon be joining Marauda for several stops on his Rite of Ascension tour. It’s clear that some exciting opportunities and milestones are on the horizon for Papa Khan.
We had the chance to speak with Papa Khan before he makes his long-awaited US debut. Check it out below!

Tell us about the beginning of the Papa Khan project. What inspired you to start making music?
My earliest inspirations for making music were Skrillex, Getter, and some 2010 EDM!
What is the story behind “Never Cared”?
I was in a toxic and abusive relationship where I was gaslighted, manipulated, and mentally abused. Until it came to the point where I simply lost the love and just didn’t care about it at all. I felt like I needed to save myself from it. So I left her game and started healing myself.
When writing such heartfelt songs, do the emotions come through naturally, or are they their own creative process?
Yes, I have lived a rough life since I was a kid. Making music is the best output for me to tell my stories to listeners! One of the best things about melodic music is its ability to create a bond between the artist and the listener through that emotion.
How much do you think about the listener while writing your music, and how does that impact your process?
I think a lot about my listeners who can relate to my stories. I feel like I make songs for those who are in/have been in the same shoes as me. It feels amazing when people tell me that my music changed their lives. It’s like I moved people.
You’ll be joining Marauda’s Rite of Ascension tour this March and making your US debut! What are you most excited about?
To see the fans, of course! And hug them! And play some new Papa Khan stuff in front of people!
We can’t wait to have you in Tempe and Albuquerque! What should fans expect from a Papa Khan set?
Some emotional sad boy EDM stuff! Haha. Some more melodic sounding Papa Khan sets. And some live singing!
In addition to your massive US debut, what else can we expect from Papa Khan in 2022?
You can expect to hear some more cool music! And some new sounds that I have developed in the studio! I have been cooking up a lot of different stuff for the Papa Khan project and I can’t wait to show everyone what I got!
What is your biggest goal for the future?
I want to live in a decent house somewhere in my hometown Banjarmasin, learn so many new things in life.. Not just music, get a happy life, and make more music!
