The year was an interesting one for the EDM community to say the least. Genres like Techno, Drum & Bass, and DJs such as Fred again.. and John Summit dominated the charts and sold out massive stadiums. However, A new year is upon us. This means new songs, new upcoming artists, and new festivals for ravers to enjoy. In this blog post, I will introduce several of my favorite female techno DJs to help you start the year off right! Techno can be an acquired taste for some, but those who are passionate about the genre knows just how powerful it can be. Let’s begin.
There is no better way to start off this list than with Dark Techno legend Sara Landry. Sara’s music contains neck-breaking drum beats, ethereal sound effects/vocal patterns, and numerous, subtle changes in tempo to keep you guessing on the dance floor. Snares, cymbals, and synths all clash in an orchestra of sound and mood, while overlaying samples help tell the song’s story. For a perfect example of these traits, look no further than the track “Peer Pressure,” which includes a sample of someone stating their intentions to “not go out…I’m sick” as the beat shows them exactly what they would be missing by not attending. Sara Landry continues to perform around the globe, bringing Techno to festivals, nightclubs, and events that would otherwise be apprehensive to do so. This is how much of a splash Sara has made in the industry as a whole. Other Highlights include Sara’s Boiler Room Set and an extended NYE Playlist on Apple Music.

Juliet Fox is another legendary Techno DJ, as judged by the fact that she has secured releases on Nicole Moudaber’s MOOD Record Label (according to Twitter) and is a global star. Her brand of techno is a bit more progressive and more mellow than the first entry on this list, but still absolutely slays. Elements of House Music, such as the famous House Snare effects can also be found within her music. The song “Time is Running Out” perfectly encapsulates her progressive style. Beginning with a steady, fist-pumping beat, the song steadily increases in tempo and complexity, while hauntingly reciting “One year, one month, one day, one second, today, tomorrow, yesterday” over intergalactic synths. References to the famous “red and blue pills” from the film The Matrix are also present here, adding to the haunting effectiveness of this track.

Originally hailing from Vilvoorde, Belgium, Amelie Lens is a DJ/producer and the proud owner of the Lenske record label. Her unique brand of Techno embraces the underground and provides a solid framework for all-night warehouse ragers. Her spiritual yet dark music adds a ton to the genre and makes her a solid pick for this Mt. Rushmore of women in Techno. “Drift” creates a sonic equivalent to the terrifying vastness of space, while “Radiance” takes us on an inter-dimensional journey through light, sound, and the senses. Amelie has also recently had a babygirl, which gives me hope that she will pass her gift of sound production onto the next generation. Congrats, Amelie!

Swiss DJ THELMA is perhaps the newest and freshest artist on this list. A quick search of her release history shows that she did not start uploading music to streaming platforms until 2022. That being said, she is still an incredible artist worth a spot on this list. She does an excellent job of mixing elements of light and dark to create a brand of techno that is a bit more uplifting than the usual fare. The vocal sample used in the song “+1” satirizes the (sometimes) repetitive nature of dance music while taking us to soaring highs and eerie lows, fist-pumping for the entirety of the journey. While Sara Landry earns the title of the most dynamic artist on this list, THELMA presents us with the most unique interpretation of the Techno genre so far, and her career can only skyrocket from here. CHEERS!

Lindsey Herbert is a local legend who is originally from Los Angeles, California, but currently resides in Phoenix, Arizona. She has accomplished a lot of things and frequently travels to Techno Hubs such as Chicago, Detroit, Berlin, and Amsterdam to put on show-stopping performances. She shows no signs of slowing down and often has a chaotic tour schedule in order to bring her music to the masses. The song “After Hours” surfs on a consistent beat while vocal samples tell the listener to “stay awake” and “come and dance” on top of progressive techno elements. Peep her Instagram for upcoming shows, as seeing her is worth every penny.
