YetepLegendary record label Monstercat has welcomed a massive new collaboration between WHIPPED CREAM and Fourfive, entitled “Who’s Laughing Now.” Strap in for a track of epic proportions!
Every so often, a song comes along that grabs hold of your expectations and totally obliterates them. This is one of those rare occasions. I never quite know what to expect from Canadian DJ/Producer WHIPPED CREAM (Caroline Cecil), due to her tendency to genre-hop and work with artists such as Lil Xan and Baby Goth, and this was no exception. The song begins with ominous notes, as well as a subtle background synth pattern and Whipped Cream’s incredible vocals.
“Threw it all away. ha ha.”
“Who’s laughing now? ha ha.” chants WC repeatedly as ticking percussion and heavenly strings build up a steadily rising crescendo.
These production choices give off a lovely blend of utopian and dystopian vibes, showing off her unique style and production choices. WC harmonizes over the rising beat as a collegiate sound comes into the auditorial foreground, as the drums continue to tick back and forth. A sudden rise leads to the grand entrance of Fourfive. This is where the song takes an unexpected shift in tone and genre.
His arrival increases the tempo of the song and implements clap and bass sounds to full effect. Fourfive’s rhymes are dynamic, while still reflecting the overall themes of the song. His flow matches the beat perfectly, while complimenting WC’s incredible vocal range. The duo join each other and exchange inquires about “Who’s Laughing Now?” A giggle from the famed producer herself leads us into the closing drop of the song. Laugh/giggle ad libs by DJs and producers are one of my FAVORITE things about the EDM genre. Little moments like these put the producer’s full personality on display, making them funny and relatable to those listening to their art.
This is an incredible song that caught me off guard with its near-immediate shift in tone and vibe. Definitely check this one out if you are searching for something bold and unexpected.
