I recently attended Mersiv‘s show at the Marquee Theater in Tempe, Arizona and was taken aback by one of the opening acts: VEIL. VEIL comes to us straight out of The City of Brotherly Love: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is best known for her metallic, futuristic, and atmospheric style of dubstep. She is also the owner of the Street Ritual record label. Her cybernetic vibe stands out among the crowd and features dark drums, laser-focused synth lines, and eccentric, dystopian samples. Influences from numerous genres sneak their way into VEIL’s unique brand. “Mink2,” off of the Surveillance EP is a perfect representation of all of these elements pleasantly clashing in a storm of sound. Dark DnB breakbeats also make an appearance, backed up but subtle whistling sounds. The whole track is perfectly executed and keeps up with the consistent theme of the EP.
Next up is Wakaan release “Exoplanet” featuring Notlö. This song is off the charts and begins with a metallic slithering effect over a tapping hi-hat that descends into a heavy drum beat, taking on a bit of a hip-hop bounce. A whimsical flute effect can be heard if you listen closely. Cybernetic vocals and twinkling effects trail off in the distance as the bass lumbers from side to side like a giant space worm. What a MASSIVE track. The prominent drums and BEEFY bass are layered together perfectly. There are plenty of subtle twists and turns that add a fun element of surprise to the listening experience. “Exoplanet” mixes the best parts of ethereal and heavy EDM music into a magnificent track that is sure to transport you to another realm. Happy Trails!
