Although I’ve mentioned several times that the bass industry seems oversaturated, the level of creativity and innovation emerging from it is truly remarkable. Nonetheless, there are times when I crave some throwback dubstep tunes, to reminisce about simpler times. There’s a certain charm in revisiting a song from years ago, as it evokes positive memories and allows you to rediscover old favorites after years of neglect. Here are five of my favorite throwback old school dubstep songs, which I hope will bring back some positive memories!
“Destroid 7 Bounce” by Excision, Space Laces
This track never fails to evoke great memories and consistently ignites the crowd whenever it’s dropped live. The buildup is swift, leading to a deep dub foundation that reverberates through your core. As the drop hits, two deep notes seemingly pierce the underground, accompanied by perfectly placed high-frequency elements that intensify the bass, creating an incredibly heavy song. If you’re a bass enthusiast who hasn’t heard this track, it’s a must-listen!
“Bonfire” by Knife Party
Arguably one of the most popular dubstep songs of the early 2010s, “Bonfire” by Knife Party remains a timeless banger. With its deep tones, mid-range focus, and infectious beats, it epitomizes classic dubstep track of its era. The arrangement is insane, and featuring a headbang-worthy drop, this song transcends generations.
“Ruffneck – Full Flex” by Skrillex
Skrillex has plenty of old school dubstep hits, making it challenging to select just one track. “Ruffneck – Full Flex” exemplifies the classic mid-range sound that Skrillex mastered due to the limitations of speaker systems at the time. Despite its heaviness, the song boasts remarkable arrangement and harmonies, making it a timeless piece worth revisiting.
“Bass Cannon” by Flux Pavilion
As a titan in the bass industry, Flux Pavilion played a significant role in shaping contemporary bass music. “Bass Cannon” stands out as one of his most iconic tracks, still packing a punch to this day. With a rapid drop and infectious beat structure, it serves as the perfect complement to the heavy bass notes, especially when experienced live.
“Crave You – Adventure Club Remix” by Adventure Club, Flight Facilities
While artists like Skrillex and Flux Pavilion influenced the bass scene, Adventure Club contributed to its accessibility and expansion. Their remix of “Crave You” demonstrates this approach, featuring full verses and vocal-focused elements alongside top-tier sound production. The drop maintains a clean yet heavy dubstep flavor, serving as many people’s introduction to the genre.
Listening to these throwback dubstep tracks is not just a trip down memory lane but also a testament to the enduring appeal and evolution of bass music.
