I made a promise to myself this April Fool’s Day that I would not fall for any obvious Instagram prank posts and keep my guard up. A post created by Australian DJ SIPPY helped shatter this promise about forty minutes into April 1st. Go figure! With the tension of falling for a prank already broken, I was able to freely enjoy the aforementioned post.
The post was of SIPPY claiming to be obsessed with a livestream of a rotting banana wearing earbuds and googly eyes that she had been (apparently) binging for the past few days. She shared the link to the stream, which I clicked on immediately. I was confused as the banana was very rotten, but the timer next to it said 54 minutes and continued counting down. If this stream had been going on as long as SIPPY had claimed, how did they know EXACTLY how long the banana would take to rot, in order to set the timer? Wouldn’t the timer keep going forward to document how long the banana was sitting out for? These questions (among many more) flooded my head as I watched the stream, titled “Science.”
I eventually spotted a Monstercat logo on the bottom left corner, leading me to believe that this was countdown to a release of some kind. However, I did not have any idea that SIPPY was the one behind this. I took a nap and discovered the song upon awaking a few hours later. At this point, I realized that I had fallen for this April Fools Prank hook, line, and sinker. I saw the song as a new release on my Apple Music home page and saw SIPPY sharing the album cover of the single, titled “The Banana Song” on her Instagram page.
“The Banana Song” is an endlessly catchy track that is PERFECT for the current transition between the spring and summer months. “Banana” begins by asking the important questions: “How brown does a banana have to be to be bad?” As the singer also debates the state of bananas that are not ripe enough or pleasantly freckled, claiming that these ones are the best ones. This potassium-based debate takes place over a classic, reggae-tinged dubstep beat, tropical drums, trumpets, and spiraling bass. The drop is pleasantly wonky, as “banana, banana have to be to be bad” repeatedly echoes in the background. A post- drop chorus greets us, stating “a banana a day keep the doctor away, but I could eat them all every day” as the dubstep beat gets chunkier. “Banana” ends with a chant about peeling and eating bananas.
This is an incredible song with a hilariously brilliant marketing strategy behind it. It has even created a social media trend of SIPPY fans asking her to rate bananas in various states of ripeness or decay, as well as response videos of people wearing absurd banana-oriented costumes and outfits. I never thought that a critical account of the ripeness and patterns of bananas would make for such an excellent dubstep track. Nicely done, SIPPY! You flawlessly executed an April Fools Prank-oriented release, which I will never forget falling for 100%.
