Rising dubstep star Austeria tackles ego, disloyalty, and betrayal in her newest release: “Shadows of Deceit.” The lyrics are delivered using a chilling and haunting whisper, in perfect lockstep with the track’s ambitious title.
“I’m getting sick of playing small. Think that I’m done with it all. Tip-toeing around your ego, making you feel 10 feet tall,” whispers Austeria, as atmospheric instrumentals subtly play in the background. These instrumentals gradually increasing in variety and intensity as the song goes on. She is clearly fed up with this disingenuous individual and the toxic relationship that has been created from the betrayer’s actions and over-inflated ego. Austeria is now fully aware of the situation she is in, tired of reducing herself to satisfy the betrayer. This individual appears to take pleasure in stringing her along, deriving even more pleasure from her sudden awareness of the situation. Talk about TWISTED! The song has just begun, and it is already intense beyond measure. This is going to be a good one, folks!
The verse continues: “Yeah I’ve known about it all this time. Your affections were always lies. Stuck around for it, I don’t know why. Now I’m turning off the lights.” The closing line of this verse plays into the title, a metaphor for the shadows being exposed and putting an immediate end to the betrayer’s ego-driven toxicity that was slowly consuming her. Shadows need light to exist, making this an extremely accurate way to describe exposing the lies of the betrayer and terminating the relationship. Heart-pounding drums and malevolent bass lead us to the first drop, which includes warped spirals of bass, bouncing lasers, and drums that move about like a rapid heartbeat.
“I think it’s time that they know. You’re not the good guy at all. I think it’s time that they know,” sings an exasperated Austeria. The deceiver has lied to others about his actions, roping innocent bystanders into his web of lies. But fret not, his lies are about to be publicly exposed to these bystanders, much to the shock and surprise of the deceiver.
A haunting “lalala lalala” demonstrates the comfort and solace that the narrator takes in exposing the deceiver for the fraud that he is. She knows she is in the right and is not shy about letting others know it. “Im setting fire to your show” physically embodies the burning down of the relationship and an end to the lies. The fuzzy, cybernetic bass gives way to the subtle, atmospheric beat from the beginning of the song as we are led into the second verse.
“Getting sick of playing small. I owe myself so much more.” The narrator knows her worth now and will no longer stand for the toxic treatment that she has been subjected to. “You don’t cover your tracks, so I got receipts from way back.” The deceiver has become so overconfident that little to no effort was put into hiding what he was doing, giving the narrator plenty of metaphorical ammunition to thoroughly expose him. However, this overconfidence is equally matched by the confidence given to the narrator for keeping these receipts. All I can say is WOW! These lyrics are incredible and extremely well thought out. Bravo, Austeria!
The second chorus kicks in, as rising and falling bass appears to engulf the lies of the betrayer, like a metaphorical black hole. What a genius production choice! The drums make a dramatic return, leading us into the second drop. This drop is much louder and, in your face, than the first, as blaring alarm effects dance in tow with the chunky bass. There are several more “Lalala” ad-libs present here, maniacally laughing at the satisfaction of exposing this individual and being free of them FOREVER! The bass continues to bob back and forth, as the other elements begin to slowly fade out. “Shadows of Deceit” concludes with a heavenly choir and Austeria’s whispering delivery of the final lines: “I think it’s time that they know. You’re not the good guy at all.”
“Shadows of Deceit” has easily found a place in my top three favorite Austeria tracks, due to the intense lyrics, beat, and subject matter. The terror that the narrator feels in the beginning of the track is intense and palpable. However, the beaming satisfaction and confidence that the narrator has by the end of the track is even MORE palpable. This is a rollercoaster ride of a track that encompasses the highs and lows of the human experience, covering the wide spectrum of emotions that we are capable of feeling. The title is a perfect fit for the lyrics and auditory style of the song.
I do not often find myself quoting a song’s entire lyrical content, but it was necessary here to properly convey just how intense and well-written the lyrics are. The “Lalala” ad-libs were a stroke of genius, gradually taunting the deceiver more and more as the song goes on. PERFECTION. This is a winning track from start to finish and I highly recommend it. Listen above and strap in for the incredible journey that “Shadows” will take you on. Check this one out IMMEDIATELY.
