Chicago Rapper ProbCause and Colorado native GorillaT have teamed up to bring us an aesthetically (and lyrically) charged collaboration known as “Kinetic Flavor.” The song combines ProbCause’s effortless flow with the trademark wonky and wubby stylings of GorillaT to bring us the best of their respective talents. “Kinetic Flavor” starts out slow and steady with orbital noise, full-bodied string effects, downtempo claps, and shimmering nuggets of bass. Probcause can be heard ad-libbing in the background:
“I came here to bring the flavor. Something made with love for your soul that you can savor.”
The instrumental continues to build as ProbCause does his thing. Earth-shattering drums guide us out of the intro and into the first verse. Prob continues:
“Got so much hot shit in the oven, would of thought I was a baker. Patty cake, patty cake mixing up the batter. Prob got the recipe, serve it on a platter. Just some food for thought, always stirring up the pot.” As GorillaT provides a solid, wubby foundation to lift up Prob’s lyrics and flow. The food/recipe metaphors continue throughout this track. A clever play on the lengthy process behind music production and its respective “ingredients.” Let them COOK!
The instrumentals are akin to slowly slipping into an iridescent portal. A perfect setting for these artists to display their talents. The electronic strings maintain their integrity throughout the track accompanied by the roaring drum effects. The claps gradually increase in tempo, as the proverbial walls melt around us. Intense splashes of bass flow in and out, before spiraling outward. ProbCause continues his verse and declares:
“We about to feast. THAT SHIT SPICY!” Which leads into a sludgy mid-tempo drop, GorillaT’s specialty! The bass in this drop is wonky and progressive with multiple layers. One layer is the sonic equivalent of a crashing or hacked computer, while the others provide shuffling wubs and digital scratches. Prob interjects as the orbital noises return. This slightly changes up the sound of the drop, providing additional variety.
Prob returns for another verse. This time with a stronger instrumental backing behind his bars. The second drop is strictly wubs, showcasing GorillaT’s primate-esque production style. Subtle synth notes and laser noises shoot out of the headphones directly into my brain. Perfection. The bass serves two purposes in this drop. One layer is in charge of the wonkiness, while the other provides a solid backdrop in order to keep things grounded. The song slow fades out after this drop, bringing things to a close.
This is a great expansion on GorillaT’s existing sound and is a perfect representation of Prob’s skills as a rapper. I am absolutely HERE for more GorillaT and Rap/Hip-Hop collaborations in the future. “Kinetic Future” is a bit different than other GorillaT projects, as his production style is a bit more reserved in the track’s verses. This is not a bad thing by any means. In fact, this production choice puts an added spotlight on Prob’s verses, something that needs to be done in more collaborations. “Kinetic Future” would likely not sound the same if the wonky production overshadowed Prob’s dynamic verses. GorillaT has his time to shine in this one and he knows it. GorillaT and ProbCause work GREAT together and I hope to see more collaborations between them in the future. Check this one out if you are a fan of rap, EDM, or any of the collaborating artists. You will not be disappointed!
GorillaT is heading to Darkstar Tempe on Saturday, July 6th for his Wonk Factory tour. Grab tickets HERE. He will also be heading to Effex Nightclub in Albuquerque on Friday, August 3rd. Get those tickets HERE.
