What Makes Illenium So Popular?

Illenium is one of those DJs that I truly believe is a blessing to humanity. His ability to connect with his listeners on a deep level is unmatched, and his prowess at production gives him a fighting chance at being one of the best artists to have ever existed. Both his live sets, DJ sets, and his discography are top-notch, as proven by the attendance at his shows and his streaming numbers. I am excited to share why I think Illenium is so popular, ahead of his upcoming performance on June 29th for the Return of Rawhide!

In my opinion, it all starts with his discography. You can be the most energetic, infectious person live, but if your music isn’t gold, you will not have a long-lasting time in the spotlight. Illenium, even from his earlier releases, has consistently produced well-thought-out songs. His songs are typically very vocal-focused, but that doesn’t stop him from intricately planning out the melody, countermelody, and rhythm, creating a moving and complicated masterpiece in a song. He has also released a range of genres, first starting off with a heavy focus on future bass, then moving to bass music, rocktronic, and more recently, house. This allows him to tap into different fan bases. I also wanted to call out how incredibly touching his lyrics are. The songs are on the emotional side and cover a range of emotions, and the sheer size of his discography means that no matter what you are going through, Illenium has a song for you, which pushes his popularity on a deeper, almost spiritual level.

Another reason why he is so popular is his ability to mix extremely well. Even when his discography was mainly future bass, he still played other genres, but where Illenium really separates himself in the live setting is his ability to transition seamlessly from one genre to another. His mixing ability is next to none, and his ability to actually take you on a smooth yet adventurous journey is incredible. Illenium also performs live instruments, often with the support of fellow artists, and the hybrid between strings and electronics is breathtaking.
