YetepEDM artists have an extraordinary level of creativity, partly due to how they create their music. While a traditional band is limited to the sounds their instruments can produce, electronic artists can literally make any sound they can imagine if they have the technical prowess to create it. There are no limits. Because of this, individual artists’ brands are strong, as they have to differentiate themselves from a vast number of competitors. What’s incredibly cool is when two (or more) EDM artists’ worlds not only collide but combine to produce something where the sum is greater than the parts individually. You can see this with more and more EDM “groups” popping up, but what I really love are collab EPs and albums—a temporary moment in time when artists put their heads together and create something wonderful.
Collab EPs and albums are incredible because the artists come together for a project, not just for a back-to-back performance or a single collab track. This allows the artists to truly integrate with each other, fusing their styles (or even creating a brand new style), and the artistry truly shines. While there aren’t many examples of this, the ones out in the world are true shining moments. One that particularly stands out is Wooli and Excision’s collab EP Evolution. From top to bottom, this EP is stacked with timeless bangers and showcases the potential when artists put their minds together. Other notable collab projects include Bronson (a collaboration between Odesza and Golden Features, creating a brand new style) and Fred again.. and Brian Eno’s Secret Life album—both legendary projects.
It seems like artists are leaning more and more into collaboration. Svdden Death, in particular, is not only part of the new bass headliner group Masterhand but also has a Voyd X Pyke collab EP on the way. Svdden Death and Pyke are notably amazing producers in the bass world, and them coming together for an entire collab EP will shake the scene to its core. EDM is in an amazing spot, and I cannot wait for the destruction this new collab EP will bring.
