YetepFox Stevenson is a genre-blending DJ/producer from England who began his career as Stan SB. He currently resides in The Netherlands and has worked with renowned labels such as Liquicity and Spinnin’ Records. The bandana rocking artist specializes in dubstep and drum & bass with pop-punk inspired tempo and vocals. In fact, Fox Stevenson’s songs first introduced me to the world of DnB. “Bruises” appeared on my recommendations and I was instantly hooked! I did not know the name of the genre at the time, but loved the fast pace and intense breakbeats. Discovering his music also lead me to Dutch producer Maduk, opening the DnB floodgates even further. His singing and songwriting talents add a whole new layer to his impressive production skills.
Killjoy is Fox Stevenson’s magnum opus. An inspiring album full of introspection, extended verses, and upbeat party jams. The opener, “Out My Head” is a head-bobber that discusses anxiety, battle scars, and feeling lost. This track puts a positive spin on these issues. Acknowledging that these problems exist but letting listeners know that they can be overcome with the right attitude. The title track “Killjoy” opens with calming ocean waves while it gradually evolves. “Killjoy” is a slow burn that deals the hidden darkness within himself. Using its descriptive lyrics as a metaphor for harming others with your negativity. “Like That” is one of the catchiest songs on the album and features some of my favorite lyrics. References to “illuminati lizards,” Valhalla, and Poseidon abound in this one. “Like That” is upbeat, confident, and full of pleasant contradictions. Fox even counts down to the drops. Creating anticipation and a great payoff! “Dreamland” touches on a sort of collective dissociation that humans experience. Asking the question “Does everybody live in a Dreamland?” Melodic guitars and lightning-fast breakbeats create a diverse soundscape. The introspective lyrics dance along with the party beat. Creating a track that is both fun and meaningful. In my opinion, Killjoy is a flawless album with no skips and I highly recommend it!
“Deja Vu,” “Can’t Even Tell,” and “The Heat” show off Fox Stevenson’s diverse set of influences and production skills. Meshing together wubby dubstep, alternative rock vocals, and (of course) DnB. Fox stands out in numerous ways and is definitely worth checking out. His heavy touring in Europe has made him one of the most anticipated artists that I HAVE to see live. He is coming to the U.S. next year, stopping in cities including Salt Lake City, Chicago, and Denver. Fingers crossed that he will make a stop in Phoenix as well. Fox Stevenson is one of my favorite producers and has a solid discography that you should check out ASAP!
