Like many people, I’ve always said I enjoy all EDM music. And for the most part, that’s true—well, except for Techno and Trance (sorry!). While these genres are obviously popular worldwide, their minimalistic nature has never really excited me. But early in 2024, a friend introduced me to Sara Landry. Judging by the year she’s had, I know my story isn’t unique, but wow—my life was changed. Hard Techno absolutely hits, and I’m thrilled to tell you why.
So, what exactly is Hard Techno? Let’s start with the basics: genres don’t come with strict “rules,” especially not anymore. But generally, Hard Techno is faster than regular Techno, typically clocking in around 150 BPM. It’s known for its aggressive tonality, achieved through distortion, pounding basslines, and an intense vibe that feels like it’s meant to shake your soul. These tracks often skip the ethereal melodies and go straight for the gut, bringing relentless bass that’s best experienced live. Unlike dubstep, where heavy beats hit sporadically, Hard Techno makes you feel the bass on every single beat. It’s unrelenting, immersive, and delivers a euphoric escape from reality.
My love for Hard Techno started with Sara Landry but quickly expanded to include other incredible artists like 999999999 and I Hate Models. These artists dominated my playlists last year and solidified my obsession with the genre. For any bass lovers out there who might be on the fence, I highly recommend spending just 20 minutes at a Hard Techno set the next time you’re at a festival. You might just stumble upon a hidden passion and broaden your musical horizons in the process
